Item 4GCITY OF
SOUTHLAKI
MEMORANDUM
(February 12, 2014)
To: Shana Yelverton, City Manager
From: Greg Hendricks, Interim Director of Information Technology
Subject: Consent agenda item 4G - Approve a contract with Scientel Wireless
for installation of the Town Square wireless network in the amount of
$45,000.
Action
Requested: Approve a contract with Scientel Wireless to acquire and
install the Town Square public wireless network in the
amount of $45,000.
Background
Information: Ordinance No. 994 approved the Economic Development
and Tourism Strategic Plan portion of the Southlake 2030
Plan. With this, amenities such as free public WiFi (T1.8)
that encourage people to stay longer in Town Square would
increase opportunities for investment in local businesses.
This project will address this requirement by installing a free
wireless network covering the Town Square park area,
gazebo, shopping areas, and the majority of the extended
parking areas while allowing for future expansion as needed.
Scientel Wireless provides wireless network and camera
products and services for many area cities including Fort
Worth and Plano. We will leverage their capabilities to build
a reliable experience for Southlake visitors. We expect to
have this environment available by the end of May 2014.
Financial
Considerations: Purchasing policy dictates that when spending reaches
$50,000 with a single vendor the additional spending
requires City Council approval. This project will reach the
total budgeted amount for Scientel Wireless of $92,000.
Strategic Link: C6 — "Enhance the sense of community by providing
excellent customer service and citizen engagement
opportunities" — improve citizen access to information and
collaboration while in Town Square.
136 — "Optimize Use of Technology" — enables the IT
department to maintain supportable systems and services.
