City of Southlake Senior Advisory Commission Quarterly Report
The Southlake Senior Center continues to grow in the richness of new members, friendships,
and experiences. And were always looking ahead to our next adventures.
Dining under the stars in Italy. Experiencing New Orleans' cuisine. Celebrating Christmas
Riverwalk- and Mexican -style. Enjoying a Chinese meal. Trying Greek- and Middle Eastern -
inspired Cincinnati Chili. Traveling to England to visit a retirement community of musicians.
We've gotten around these last three months ... and we didn't even need to pack a bag or
passport.
For "Valentino's Italian Ristorante," stepping into the Senior Center meant stepping out onto a
star- and candle -lit piazza with a flowing fountain to enjoy a romantic and delicious Italian
Valentine dinner. We dined on French, Acadian and Cajun foods at Copeland's of New Orleans
at Southlake Town Square. We happily lunched at the Gaylord Texan Resort's Riverwalk
Cantina and marveled at the stunning Christmas decor at Arlington's Campo Verde restaurant.
Bo Bo China Restaurant in Grapevine welcomed us to the Orient. And we tried to figure out
what was in the Cincinnati Chili (yes, that was cinnamon and chocolate).
But we did a lot more than eat!
We journeyed into Dallas to see the acclaimed movie "Quartet" which featured Dame Maggie
Smith in her role as a musician moving into a retirement home. We were also challenged to
sing carols at a stranger's door ... except that the "strangers" were members of the Southlake
Senior Center who opened their lovely home to delight us with sights, sounds and tastes of
Christmas. A mystery trip took us to the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in
Arlington. Who knew we would get to try bowling with antique balls and pins? Before
Christmas, we experienced a "strange shopping" day which took us from "Sleeping Lizards" in
Denton to the "Plaid Peacock" in Roanoke.

We also bettered our health with exercise, speakers and workshops. We were entertained by
students from Durham Elementary and The Dallas Tap Dazzlers. We even made a party out of
leftovers!
And we've begun a new challenge with the new year. We're trying at least 12 new things each
month to keep ourselves fresh and life interesting. With warmer weather coming, the Senior
Center has plans for even more adventures. Some of those may even call for luggage and a
passport....
