SOUTHLAKE TEXAS u City of Southlake Senior Advisory Commission Quarterly Report Southlake Senior Center attendance continues to grow. The summer months brought us 172 more participants than last summer. And the seniors haven't come just to play. They've grown, bettered their health, and given freely of themselves. We've grown.... We learned six new dances under professional instructors Ernie and Diane Meyer, beginning and intermediate Bridge with our own Advisory Commission Chair David Baltimore, and how to be better drivers through the AARP Driver Safety course. Police Services Patrol Officer Jonathan Macheca taught us how to avoid scams. Renni Burt, DPS Community Initiatives Officer, arranged for us to become certified in administering life- saving CPR. We even had a personal lesson in Qi Gong from Councilman Jeff Wang, and have made it a part of our weekly Tai Chi classes. A memorable history lesson came directly from Sam Houston (a /k /a Jack Edmondson from Heroes of History). And we enjoyed a mystery trip to Baylor Hospital's amazing hand exhibit. We've gotten healthier.... Attendance at our various exercise classes grew, as did our understanding of how to manage pain. Kyle Taylor, Emergency Management Coordinator and Assistant to the Director of Southlake's Department of Public Safety, provided tips on protecting ourselves from the West Nile Virus. And we experienced first -hand how quickly the on -duty DPS Medic Crew, while in the Center for its monthly blood sugar and blood pressure checks, could perform a medical intervention to help save the life of a senior adult. We've shared.... Most impressive have been our seniors in their generous provision of children's games, toys and books to GRACE, Grapevine's relief agency, for their Christmas Cottage program. Our senior adults who live with or near their adult children participated in a research project. And with our own initiative, "Seniors Support Southlake," we've produced 600 receipts in two months of patronizing Southlake's merchants and service providers... and we have four months to go! j SOUTHLAKE TEX And we've laughed._ But we haven't forgotten how to just have fun! Our Center has been filled with laughter as our own seniors modeled unforgettable outfits at our Harper's BIZARRE Fashion Show. We had a mock wedding (where the bride remembered everything except for a groom), and we became a sea of orange at a Metroport Meals on Wheels luncheon. In honor of the 2012 Summer Olympics, we had our very own Laundry Olympics where our "athletes" earned medals in some pretty laughable competitions.
