Item 4K AudioHonorableMayor and Council: The purpose of this item is to officially call the May 12, 2012 General Election for the City of Southlake. 1 On May 12, Southlake residents will go to the polls to elect a Mayor and City Council th member to Place 2. Resolution No. 12-006 provides that the City of Southlake will enter into a joint election agreement with the counties of Denton and Tarrant. The City of Southlake has entered into joint election agreements for previous years to provide election services. The City realizes a cost savings by entering into a joint election contract with other entities (municipalities and school districts) for the counties to conduct the election. The City Secretary’s Office will remain available to answer any questions from the public related to the municipal election. 2 Electionsin Texas are governed by the Texas Election Code and home-rule city charters. The May 12, 2012 General Election shall be called by the governing body no later than March 5, 2012. Pursuant to State law, elections in Texas must be conducted on a uniform election date—second Saturday in May or the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Southlake’s City Charter states that a regular City election shall be held annually in May. The City Secretary’s Office will accept candidate filings from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during regular business days from February 4 –March 5, 2012. 3 Early Votingby personal appearance will begin April 30, 2012 and conclude on May 8, 2012. There will be additional hours on Saturday and Sunday and extended hours on May 7 and May 8. As soon as polling locations and times are finalized, staff will place the information on the City’s website, facebookaccount and MySouthlakenews.com. The early voting locations for Southlake residents that reside in Tarrant County and Denton County will remain the same. Tarrant County residents may vote at Southlake Town Hall • Denton County residents may vote at Trophy Club Municipal Building, 100 Municipal • Drive In addition to Town Hall and Trophy Club Municipal Building…residents may vote at any early voting location within their county.A listing of all polling locations will be provided on the City’s website. Citizens interested in voting by mail should call the City Secretary’s Office at 817.748.8015. 4 Election Day is May 12,2012 and the poll hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Election Day voting locations for Southlake residents that reside in Tarrant County and Denton County will remain the same.
