Item 3B2CITY OF Item 3132 SOUTHLAKE TEXAS Southlake Public Library Board Report — September 2011 Services • What's New This year the Library has added several electronic resources that have been well utilized. E -books are now available for the Sony Reader, Barnes and Noble Nook, and the Kindle beginning in November. Availability and access information is provided on the Library's web site and access the "Resources" menu. Almost 6,000 of the E -books have been borrowed since June. Electronic resources are available for kids — Tumble Books and Book flicks, which allows children to read a book on the computer. Pages are turned and the program can actually read the book to them if they like. The CISD libraries utilize this resource as well, saving money for the taxpayer overall. Over 35,000 books have been checked out this year from those resources. • Interlibrary Loan Do you know that the Southlake Public Library can get almost any book that has been printed and is being held in a library? As with any library we have limited resources which mean we can't buy everything that is available. We participate in a consortium and can get access to just about anything that has been printed. Last year approximately 800 items were borrowed from members of the Interlibrary Loan program that were not in the Library's collection to satisfy customer needs. Keep the Library in mind if there is anything you need, but can't find. • Electronic Resources Expanded The Library is continuing its focus on developing resources available on line for our customers to use from the convenience of their own home. We are providing a number of resources for adults and children this year. We will be upgrading the Library Catalog in September and it will allow for a browsable catalog which will help our virtual branches. It will also allow us to make the catalog available for mobile users and a more web friendly environment. • Summer Reading Club This was our strongest year yet! 2,340 participated by reading over 40,735 hours. 14,000 people attended programs and volunteers contributed 1300 hours all summer long. Visitor Stats — Year to Date Checkouts The Library has seen a 6% increase in checkouts for 2010 -11 with approximately 288,000 items checking out year -to -date. We had an 8% increase last year. The Library is close to reaching maximum limits on traffic levels due to space limitations and parking, but despite those limitations, traffic for the year is up 8% with 196,000 customers visiting the library year -to -date. Programming Storytimes and youth programming attendance has been about 31,000 year -to -date. This is quite an accomplishment given the Library's limited space.
