Item 10ACity of Southlake, Texas MEMORANDUM January 3, 2002 TO: Billy Campbell, City Manager FROM: Kevin Hugman, Director of Community Services SUBJECT: Officially naming City park currently known as "Sheltonwood" park Action Requested: City Council adoption of the official name of a City park (presently referred to as Sheltonwood Park). Background Information: As you are aware, the park property informally known as Sheltonwood Park is a 17 -acre, heavily wooded and undeveloped neighborhood park located on Dove Road. The park was part of the Chivers Survey and purchased approximately two years ago from former property owner John Shelton. At the October Park Board meeting, the Board considered a staff recommendation to officially adopt the name "Sheltonwood Park" for the park. At that time, the Board decided to pursue another name for the park and requested that staff work with a local elementary school to solicit ideas. City staff provided a "ballot" to each of the classes at Johnson Elementary and asked them to submit their top two entries by November 2, 2001. Four entries were received with a total of eight proposed names. The class who submits the winning park name will be treated to a pizza party sponsored by the Community Services Department. The names submitted, in no particular order, were as follows: 1. Liberty Park 2. Great Adventures Park 3. Wooded Trails Park 4. Dimwood Trails Park 5. Dragon Park 6. Southlake Trails Park 7. Dove Peace Park 8. Patriotic Park The Park Board recommended (7 -0) to recommend the name "Liberty Park" for the park area informally referred to as "Sheltonwood Park."
