Item 4CLibrary Board Report Tuesday, December 2, 200' Southlake Library Board respectfully submits this written report in an effort to maintain communication flow between the Board and City Council. 1. The Southlake Library Board held a special joint meeting with the Public Art Advisory Committee (PAAC) on Wednesday, November 12, 2003. The Board approved the following recommendations to the PAAC, who in turn approved recommendations to the City Council. These items are on your meeting agenda for consideration this evening: • Accepting the donation of services to the Southlake Public Library to create a mural in the storytime area from Bruce and Elizabeth Bonham — the recommended mural incorporates a two -part transition from a forest setting to a fantasy land setting. The artists theme for the mural is "Animals are reading books about themselves while traveling on the road to a reading adventure." • Accepting a memorial donation of art in honor of Grace O'Brien from Barbara Tipton — The donation is titled "The Dream Keepers" and Ms. Tipton, a neighbor of Ms. O'Brien for a number of years, wanted to honor Ms. O'Brien's service to the community as a librarian in the Carroll I. S.D. The Board and the PAAC approved a recommendation for placement of this piece of art in the Youth Services area over the computer workstations. • Accepting the donation of commemorative art from previous Art In The Square Events from Debbie Baynard — Ms. Baynard has proposed to donate a print that was used on the Art In The Square T -shirts this past year, and to make a similar donation to the Library for placement in the study rooms and around the Library on an annual basis. The Board and the PAAC approved a recommendation to accept donations from previous events, and decided to consider each additional donation on an annual basis. 2. The next Library Board meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library to accommodate holiday scheduling. 3. On Saturday, December 6 beginning at 9:00 a.m., Library Board, Friends of the Southlake Library (FOSL), and City staff will be participating in kicking off the beginning of a joint project with TXU Energy that involves the planting of fifty (50) trees at Chesapeake Park. This is a pilot project initiated by TXU that will benefit parks and the Library for several thousand dollars in the first year, with the potential for ongoing annual donations.
