Item 3B1CITY OF SOUTHLAKE TEXAS Item 3131 - Senior Report Southlake Senior Advisory Commission Board Report — March 2011 o Programs — • October • Our Fall Dance was well attended with music by the UpSwing Band. • A Story Teller impersonating John Wayne was a popular event at the Senior Center. • November o We had a Veterans Day Celebration with a presentation of colors by the ROTC from Keller Central High School. • December o Two holiday events featuring entertainment from Rockenbaugh Elementary School "Music Makers" and the Durham Elementary School Choir. • February • Dedication of our new 23 passenger bus on February 15 with a special luncheon, honoring our Grantors. • The Annual Southlake Women's Valentines Luncheon was, once again, a very popular event with 75 tickets (the maximum) distributed. • The first annual Health & Lifestyle Expo was held. There were 29 vendors and a list of 10 more on the waiting list for space. Over 70 seniors attended. This turned out to be very successful, the vendors were very pleased and we plan to make it an annual event. • March o First trip on the new bus to the Amon Carter Museum (one of Grantors). The bus was full and there was a long waiting list. March 18 was a trip to the Dallas Heritage Center and a trip to see Phantom at the Artisan Theatre on the 24 is sold out. • Monthly • Jam Session on Thursday nights with Sonny Cate and the Texas Jammers brings in a large audience of approximately 50. • The Southlake Library continues to do a monthly book talk for our seniors here at the center. • Trips o The Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, several plays at the Artisan Theatre and Palace Theatre, the Civil War Museum and a Fashion Show at Coldwater Creek with our own Senior Ladies as Models. Southlake Senior Advisory Commission Report to City Council March, 2011 Page 2 Item 3131 - Senior Report • Area Agency on Aging of Tarrant County has become a very good resource for us and has offered several seminars, including information on Medicare Part D and Medicare Savings Programs. • We are always booking special musical guests as these are very popular, including Norris Perry and Karen Smith just recently. • The Senior Activity Center in conjunction with SSFI has joined forces with the Food Donation Connection. We now pick up surplus pastries from Starbucks and surplus meat from Chipotle twice a week. o Southlake Senior Activity Center membership and attendance continues to groir. CARS Total Trips Provided by CARS: Month 2009 2010 Sept 135 131 Oct 126 147 Nov 62 110 Dec 89 122 2010 2011 Jan 83 174 Feb 89 114 Southlake Senior Advisory Commission - Board Report March 2011 - Page 2 of 3 Southlake Senior Advisory Commission Report to City Council March, 2011 Item 3131 - Senior Report Page 3 o CARS is always seeking more drivers and with the increased numbers, they are seeking volunteers. o Facility Improvements The following items have been added to the facility: • New /Replacement Copier • New /Replacement Refrigerator • New /Replacement Dishwasher • New Deep Freeze o Non - Profit 501c3 Southlake Senior Funding, Inc. secured funding to purchase a handicap accessible bus for Southlake Senior Activity Center and City needs. o Multipurpose Facility Input from Senior Advisory Commission — It should be noted that at the September 14, 2010 Senior Advisory Commission meeting the idea of keeping the Senior Activity Center at its current physical location and continuing improvements verses moving to a new location and becoming a part of a multipurpose facility was verbally discussed and supported by the Senior Advisory Commission. The Chair and Vice Chair of the SAC are working with City Staff on their current needs and facility improvements to discuss during budget talks.
