Item 4DLibrary Board Report Tuesday, March 2, 2004 The Southlake Library Board respectfully submits this written report in an effort to maintain communication flow between the Board and City Council. The Southlake Library Board held their meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 2004. Below is a summary of the issues addressed at the meeting. ■ Librarians Report — Library Administrator Kerry McGeath reviewed with the Board the activity of the past Month and indicated that the number of items that checked out from the Library was up 35% for the same period last year, and that Traffic was up 31 %. The Collection of materials is a to about 40,000 items. Kerry spoke at the Southlake Kiwanis Club meeting February 20' in which he spoke of the success we have had in satisfying consumer demand, since checkouts were way up, and how strong customer service and resultant word of mouth has dramatically increased our traffic in the unit. Mr. McGeath suggested that the use of tried and true retail practices is just as effective in the Library setting as in the Pottery Barn. The Library will begin implementing its Marketing and Programming Plan in April resulting in a big increase in programs offered and visibility in the Market Place. It was noted that the big increases we have had occurred prior to the Marketing/Programming plans release, and is attributable to a better selection of materials that satisfies demand and much better Customer Service. ■ New Tutoring program with Carroll Senior High Key Club — The Southlake Library and Carroll Sr. High Key Club will offer free Tutoring Monday through Thursday evening in the Library. The program is available for 1 st through 8 th Grade students that need help in Math, Science, Social Studies, Research and Report Writing Skills to name a few. The Library has also worked out with CISD to make school textbooks available at the Library for use in the Library. It is a further way that the Library can complement the schools in the area, and provide the students with what can help them. The Key Club is supported by the Southlake Kiwanis Club, of which Mr. McGeath will soon be a member, and to whom he recently spoke. • Discussion of the Computer Use Policy — Per Council's instructions we are reviewing the Computer Use Policy that was presented as Resolution 04 -010 at the February 3 rd meeting. The Library Board is going to open discussion on this matter concerning non - cardholders being able to access the Internet and other Electronic Resources in the Library. Library Staff is going to meet with the City Technical Services team and DPS to make sure enforcement policies and procedures are in place regarding the misuse of these resources. Following this month's discussion with the Board and input from other City agencies indicated we will have this issue as another discussion point in the next Library Board meeting. The following meeting (in April) staff will present the changes for acceptance by the Board and re- introduction to the City Council. ■ Mural in Storytime Area - The Mural is continually filling in the empty wall space in the Library Storytime area. The Artist, Elizabeth Bonham has had youth from Carroll Sr. High helping with the painting. Please stop by sometime and take a look at its progress.
