Item 10BCity of Southlake, Texas MEMORANDUM March 17, 2005 TO: Shana Yelverton, City Manager FROM: Malcolm Jackson, Director of Community Services SUBJECT: Approval of proposed recognition signage for Bob Jones Park batting cages Action Requested: City Council approval of proposed recognition signage for Bob Jones Park batting cages. Background Information: The Bob Jones Park batting cages were constructed in 2004 and completed in time for the Fall season. At a cost of approximately $45,000, the batting cages were equally funded through the Southlake Girls Softball Association and the SPDC Matching Funds program. As part of the SPDC Matching Funds policy, recognition signage within the parks may be designated for such projects. Section IX of the policy states, "A permanent plaque of recognition may be designated in the park or facility where the project will be recognized, the name of the project and its contributor(s), and the date of the project. Permanent recognition should be discussed and approved during the initial project proposal. The size and verbiage of any proposed signage is subject to review and approval by the Parks and Recreation Board. Proposed signage must reference that the project was completed with funding through the SPDC Project and Community Matching Funds Program. Press releases may be issued immediately to local newspapers following the acceptance of the project." Although not discussed as part of the initial project proposal, the Southlake Girls Softball Association recently approached the City to discuss a new and innovative process for recognizing the main sponsors of the batting cages. The proposal suggests etchings within the concrete walkway leading to the batting cages. Each etching would be approximately three feet in diameter, in the shape of a softball with seams, and colored with a light yellow glaze. The dedication wording would be placed within the softball. There would be one dedication per concrete slab for a total of four engraving s /etchings. The proposed wording consists of the following: ■ In Memory o£ Charles "Babe" Lacativo "Only your best is good enough. Hit away!"
