Southlake Historical
Society Chronicles
Days Gone By
Though the City of
Southlake itself may only be
just shy of its fiftieth year of
incorporation, the area in
which it lies is rich with the
histories of sharecroppers,
farmers and ranchers who
made their way to the area
for its abundance of
opportunities, much like
newcomers do today.
As a recent addition to the
roster of Community
Services Organizations
(CSOs) with an affiliation
with the city, the Southlake
Historical Society (SHS) is
one of the most interesting
groups in the city to support.
At a typical meeting at 7:00
p.m. on the fourth Monday
of each month in the
Community Center building
in Bicentennial Park, one
might find an invited guest
or member fondly recalling
the area's infancy period
through oral history. One of
the Southlake Historical
Society's most valued
contributions are these
volumes of oral histories,
which are being compiled as
records of the early times
here for future generations.
On other occasions,
discussions may center
around the location and
preservation of 19 century
structures, artifacts or farm
implements. And, as always,
the SHS is interested in
placing markers to
commemorate significant
events or places, such as
the recent work toward
marking the historical
Lonesome Dove settlement.
The SHS invites all
interested to contact the
Community Services
Department at 817 -481-
1585 for information.
Pictured above is the Wheeler- Murphy
Monument, the correct terminology for the
marker commemorating the officers slain
by Bonnie and Clyde's gang, not the
gangsters. It is located across Dove Road
from the Verizon complex.
Of special note ....

S- A- T -U -R, D -A -Y,
Saturday Nite!
It's that time once again, on
Saturday night from 7 — 10
p.m. on March 12, where
local youngsters get to blow
off a little steam with food,
games and fun, and mom
and dad get a few hours by
themselves. That's right,
one of Southlake Parks and
Recreations Department's
most popular events is
happening again. This event
is for youth ages 4 through
6 grades, and offers
supervised "free time" for
social interaction and
exercise. The deadline is 4
p.m. the Friday prior to the
event, and is $6 for pre-
registration or $10 at the
door, space permitting.
Remember that nothing is
more important than the
safety of the children, so be
prepared to show
identification at pick -up and
follow all registration
procedures. Contact the
department for more details
at 817- 481 -2374. Party on!
Lightning Safety
With the upcoming Spring youth athletic seasons beginning
soon, staff will be updating and cleaning the lightning
detection equipment at the parks.
Remember, a long horn blast means clear the fields (with
strobe light blinking), followed by three short blasts for "all -
clear" (and strobe goes off). Please contact your coach,
commissioner, or city staff at 817 - 481 -1585 if you have any
questions about the equipment
Southlake Again to Host Texas
Amateur Athletic Federation
(TAAF) Region IV Youth
Basketball Tournament
Southlake was again fortunate enough to land
the 2005 TAAF Region IV Youth Basketball
Tournament. This marks several years in a
row that the region's best youth basketball
players descend on Southlake and area gyms
to compete to move on the State Tournament.
One of Southlake's own, Recreation
Superintendent Steve Moore, has been
instrumental in keeping Southlake as a focus
of this tournament and this year serves on the
Tournament Committee. Steve's staff puts
together the informational brochures, mans
the tournament sites, and generally insures

that everything goes off without a hitch. But
the most worthwhile aspect of this event is
having it in our own backyard, which provides
a great advantage for any local teams in the
tournament, provides the Southlake economy
a substantial boost, and provides area
residents with an inexpensive way to see
some great youth basketball.
