Southlake Youth
Action Commission —
Leaders of Tomorrow
After fighting through a day
of classroom studies,
homework, and all the
assorted trappings of life as
a teenager, it is a wonder
that the young adults in
Southlake who comprise the
Southlake Youth Action
Commission (SYAC) find the
time and
energy to
devote to
improving
their
community.
But they do.
And they do
it in about as
many ways
as one could
imagine. The 7 through
12 graders who comprise
SYAC are charged with
attending at least three
consecutive meetings and
having no more than two
absences per year
(September through May) to
become standing members,
who can vote. SYAC is also
be comprised of
participating members, who
may not attend meetings on
a regular basis but are
interested in particular
projects or meeting topics.
In order to continue SYAC
membership from year to
year, participants are
required to re- submit an
application at the beginning
of each Fall season and /or
within sixty (60) days of their
first attended meeting.
According the bylaws, the
function of SYAC is to
"serve as a voice for the
City's youth and to take
action to better the
community and surrounding
areas." Not only does
becoming a
member of
SYAC instill
the values of
commitment
and
community, it
is also a
great
laboratory for
learning how to conduct
meetings and arrive at
consensus. Recently, SYAC
has participated in ethics
training, decorated collection
boxes for toys and canned
good drives, hosted a
holiday party for Therapeutic
Recreation, and assigned a
member to serve on the
Policies and Ordinance
Review Committee. The
enthusiasm of SYAC
members is quite
remarkably and their
contribution to a better
Southlake is a matter of fact.
