Southlake Boulevard and Carroll Avenue. The property address is 1110 E. Southlake Boulevard. REQUEST: The applicant is requesting two attached signs for Capital One bank: one sign on the east elevation facing N. Carroll Avenue and another sign on the south elevation facing E. Southlake Boulevard. The signs will have a letter height greater than allowed under Sign Ordinance No. 704 -B. The sign on the south elevation will also have a width greater than allowed under the ordinance. Approval of a variance is required in order to receive building permits for these signs. STAFF COMMENTS: The sign criteria, site plan and application are attached to this report. The following variances are requested: • Ord. 704 -13, Section 16.A.2 MAXIMUM LETTER/LOGO HEIGHT The maximum permitted letter /logo height is 12 inches for signs less than 100 feet from the R.O.W. and 18 inches for signs 101 to 150 feet from the R.O.W. The sign proposed on the south fa(ade is approximately 77 feet from the street right -of -way. The maximum letter /logo size permitted is 12 inches. The applicant is requesting a letter height of 22.5 inches. The proposed sign on the east fa(ade is approximately 103 feet from the street right -of -way. The maximum letter /logo size permitted is 18 inches. The applicant is requesting a letter height of 22.5 inches. • Ord. 704 -13, Section 16.A.5 SIGN WIDTH Attached signs are limited in width to 75% of the width of the single plane facade. The width of the single plane fa(ade on the south elevation is 16 feet 5.5 inches. The maximum permitted sign width is 12 feet 4 inches. The applicant is requesting a sign width of 13 feet 2.5 inches. The City Council may authorize variances in accordance with the following provision of the Sign Ordinance No. 704 -13, Section 14, Variances: The City Council may authorize variances to any restriction set forth in this ordinance, including but not limited to the number, type, area, height, or setback of signs, or any other aspect involved in the sign permitting process. In granting any variance, the City Council shall determine that a literal enforcement of the sign regulations will create an unnecessary hardship or a practical difficulty on the applicant, that the situation causing the Case No. Attachment A SP 06 -037 Page 1 unnecessary hardship or practical difficulty is unique to the affected property and is not self - imposed, that the variance will not injure and will be wholly compatible with the use and permitted development of adjacent properties, and that the granting of the variance will be in harmony with the spirit and purpose of this sign ordinance. A person may request a variance from the Sign Ordinance by filing the request with the Building Official. Any request for variance shall be accompanied by a completed application and a non- refundable filing fee in the amount specified in the current fee schedule adopted by City Council.
