Consider names for three (3) new parks in Southlake Town Square development
SUBJECT:
___________________________________________________________________________
Action Requested:
City Council consideration of names for the three new parks in Southlake
Town Square development.
Background
Information:
Effective February 18, 1996, the City adopted a procedure for naming or
renaming park facilities. The Naming and Renaming of Park Facilities
Procedures establishes the following parameters for evaluating submissions for
the naming of City park facilities.
A park facility may be named for a deceased individual(s) who have served
the community.
A park facility may be named for any deceased local, state, national, or
international figure(s).
A park facility may be named for any local, state or national geographic
area, landmark or event.
A park facility may be named for any symbol or concept associated with
the City of Southlake, the State of Texas, or the United States of America.
As part of the development of Southlake Town Square, three new parks are
anticipated to open to the public in 2006. Commonly referred to as Summit
Park, State Street Park, and Plaza Park, the facilities are strategically located
throughout the development with each providing a unique recreational
opportunity for the public. The current park “names” were chosen based on
their geographic location and proximity to adjoining streets, landmark (hill), or
future landmark (plaza).
In an effort to move forward with placement of park signage and dedication
plaques staff seeks Council consideration on the naming of the three new
parks. A news release was also issued advising the public of Parks Board intent
to review this item at their January 9, 2006 meeting and inviting suggestions
either during the meeting or via contact with City staff. No public comments
were received.
Parks Board reviewed the park areas and recommended (7-2)* naming the
parks as follows:
1.The Plaza at Town Square
2.Summit Park
3.McPherson Park (previous homestead and farm on Town Square site)
