WHEREAS,
on November 2, 2003, the United States Army began its Rest and Recuperation (R&R)
program at DFW International Airport to serve the brave men and women who are protecting our
country, our freedom and bringing freedom to the people of Iraq and Afghanistan; and,
WHEREAS,
in June, 2004 , DFW International Airport and the North Texas Commission formalized
and organized the “Welcome Home a Hero” volunteer campaign that has grown into one of the largest
and most respected on-going community initiatives in North Texas and in the United States; and,
WHEREAS,
DFW International Airport dedicated a new USO facility on Memorial Day Weekend 2004,
an oasis of care and comfort for thousands of soldiers, veterans and families; and,
WHEREAS,
hundreds of DFW International Airport employees and Airport Ambassadors work with
troops and their families on a daily basis, at all hours of the day and night; and,
WHEREAS,
the “Welcome Home a Hero” campaign has been served by thousands of committed
volunteers from business organizations, churches, chambers of commerce, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of
America and Veterans of Foreign Wars; and,
WHEREAS,
the “Welcome Home a Hero” campaign has been recognized with the George Washington
Honor Medal by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, one of the most prestigious community
service awards in the country; and,
WHEREAS,
the “Welcome Home a Hero” campaign has received hundreds of messages of gratitude
from our brave men and women in uniform, who appreciate the patriotism and hospitality of DFW
International Airport and North Texas and have made their feelings known around the world; and,

WHEREAS
, the 500,000 soldier to participate in the R&R program will be honored and recognized at
DFW International Airport during third anniversary festivities of “Welcome Home a Hero;” and,
WHEREAS,
the entire North Texas and Airport community has come together to recognize, salute and
support our troops, recognizing their sacrifice and the sacrifices of their friends and families; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,
that the members of the Southlake City Council recognize
the ongoing successful success of this critical mission executed with unwavering professionalism and
devotion to duty by the United States Army’s Personnel Assistance Point at DFW, the North Texas
Commission and thousands of community volunteers and DFW’s dedicated staff of employees; now,
BE FURTHER RESOLVED,
the Southlake City Council joins the traveling public and a grateful nation
in offering sincere thanks, appreciation and gratitude to all men and women in uniform for a job well
done. We are forever indebted to you for your sacrifice, devotion to country and commitment to duty,
and we look forward to seeing you and your brave comrades and families at the DFW airport in the
future.
