Item 3A2The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that
engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-
time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent; and,
Whereas,
the Tenth Annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) will give everyone a
chance to discover the birds in their neighborhood and “Count for the Record” by
tallying the highest number of each species seen during an outing or a sitting and
entering the amount to the Great Backyard Bird count web site; and,
Whereas,
the Great Backyard Bird Count is a community celebration of birds,
birding, and nature that encourages everyone, from beginners to experts, to join this
event which spans all of the United States and Canada; and,
Whereas,
last years participants submitted more than 60,000 checklists and reported
7.5 million birds overall and 623 different species; and,
Whereas,
bird counting helps scientists and bird enthusiasts learn a lot from
knowing the location of where the birds are located. Scientists use the counts to
document the complex distribution and movements of so many species in such a short
time; now,
Therefore,
I, Mayor Andy Wambsganss, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby
proclaim February 16-19, 2007, as
Great Backyard Bird Count Day
