Item 3C Southlake Public Library Board Report – July 2010 Services – Summer Reading Club – The library’s Summer Reading Club kicked off on May 22 and ends August 14. We have had plenty of performers for the kids throughout the summer and as of the end of June over 12,000 people attend the numerous Summer Reading Club events. This year thus far we have had over 2,200 participate in the Summer Reading Club, but many more attended our programs. We also have a Summer Reading Club for adults and teens, and over 500 have participated in that program this year. The Library has had a very busy summer and staff has handled the increased usage expertly. Interlibrary Loan – Do you know that the Southlake Public Library can get almost any book that has been printed and is being held in a library? As with any library we have limited resources which mean we can’t buy everything that is available. We participate in a consortium and can get access to just about anything that has been printed. Last year we borrowed close to 800 items that were not in our collection to satisfy customer needs. Keep us in mind if there is ever anything you need, but can’t find. Working with CISD – The Library has been working with the CISD school librarians to allow both entities to better utilize taxpayer resources. High demand items that the public library does not have the resources to provide in sufficient quantity the school libraries have, but are not using during the summer, and this year for the first time they have provided those resources for our customers to utilize. They have allowed us to satisfy user demand when we need it the most at no extra cost, and when we don’t need the resources then the schools will once again make them available to their students. Visitor Stats – Year to Date: Checkouts: The Library has seen a 10% increase in checkouts thus far this year. We had a 12% increase last year. The year ended with over 300,000 items checked out so we are continuing to see a nice increase. We are close to reaching maximum limits on our traffic levels due to space limitations and parking – despite those limitations traffic for the year is up with a 12% increase. Programming: Storytimes and youth programming attendance increased this year by 10% for this fiscal year. This is a 10% increase over a very strong year last year - quite an accomplishment given our limited space. We have had a 55% increase in volunteer hours.
