Members of the Shelton family and the Smith family were in atten- dance and helped with the official ribbon cuttings. Once the ceremony at Liberty Park concluded, guests were invited to enjoy the new spacious pavilion and dine on hamburgers and hot dogs grilled up by Community Services staff. Well over 100 people turned out to celebrate the opening of South- lake’s two newest parks including members of City Council, SPDC, Parks Board, city staff and many others who wished to commemorate the special occasion. Royal and Annie Smith Park is a 13 acre park with playground area, pavilion and trails. Royal and Annie Smith owned the property for 42 years before it was sold to the City of Southlake. A one- room cabin on the land was first used by the Smiths as a weekend home and in later years, a larger home became the couple's permanent residence. The new park was designed by Halff and Associ- ates. Construction was completed by Dean Construction. Liberty Park at Sheltonwood used to be a "dude ranch" with many visitors throughout the years. The City purchased the land in 1999 and the park is now open complete with sidewalk inlays with quotes from Mr. Shelton. The design firm of Halff and Associates is responsible for the park's look while Dean Construction made the design a reality. The parks would not be possible without the teamwork of the Southlake Parks Development Corpo- ration and the Southlake Parks Board. The parks are part of the objectives outlined in the Southlake 2025 Plan and the City's Parks Master Plan adopted in 2005. For more information about these parks please call (817) 748-8019 or go to www.SouthlakeParks.com.
