Item 4B audioHonorable Mayor and City Council Members: Item 4B on the consent agenda is for the approval of Resolution No. 10-011A, to amend Resolution No. 10-011, which called for a General Election to be held May 8, 2010, by approving contracts for election services with Tarrant County Elections Administration and Denton County Elections Administration. 1 This agenda item supports the city’s strategy map relative to the corporate objective of: •Promoting opportunities for partnerships and volunteer involvement. 2 As a reminder –Resolution No. 10-011 called for a General Election to be held on May 8, 2010 for the positions of City Council -Places 3, 4, and 5 all of which are 3-year terms. Early Voting begins April 26 and ends May 4 with polls being open various hours at various locations. The early voting polling location within the City of Southlake is Southlake Town Hall. Election Day will be on May 8 from with polls being open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. 3 school board, County, State or Federal elections. For the past several years, the Tarrant County Elections Administrator, Steve Raborn, has combined our Denton County voters into his election for the purposes of voting for Southlake City Council members. Those same voters have then been required to go to a Denton County polling place to vote in the Northwest ISD elections and other elections. During this time, the Denton County Elections Administrator did not offer Joint Election Contracts. In order for the approximately 418 Denton County registered voters in Southlake to receive a ballot, Tarrant County Elections had to hand-key each voter’s information into their system. This was a very time consuming effort on his staff. The new Denton County Elections Administrator, Frank Phillips, now offers Joint Election Contracts, and as a result, Tarrant County has informed us that they can no longer combine our Denton County voters into their system. It is my recommendation that City Council also approve a Joint Election Contract with Denton County. By doing so, the Southlake Denton County voters will be able to vote for City Council as well as for the NWISD school board on one ballot at any Denton County polling place during Early Voting (including the Trophy Club MUD Building) and at the Trophy Club MUD Building on Election Day. This allows the voter to vote on one ballot at one location, which will save them time, effort and encourage more participation, as well as, eliminate confusion. This will provide the Southlake Denton County voters some consistency in their polling places since they have already been 4 voting in Denton County for every other type of election whether it be for We will communicate the polling location change to our Denton County residents by using various communication tools such as Connect CTY, the City Newsletter, and SPIN. 5 Thank you for your attention.
