Item 4B AudioHonorable Mayor and City Council Members: Item 4B on the consent agenda is for the approval of Resolution No. 10-011, Call a General Election for May 8, 2010. 1 This agenda item supports the city’s strategy map relative to the corporate objective of: •Promoteopportunities for partnerships and volunteer involvement. 2 There will be a General Election held for the positions of Places 3, 4, and 5 all of which are 3-year terms. The first regular business day to file an application for one of these 3 positions was February 6 with the last day being March 8. The period for Early Voting is from April 26 through May 4 with polls being open various hours each day. Election Day will be on May 8 from with polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Our intent is to hold a joint election with Carroll ISD dependent on whether or not they have opposed races. 3 participation, as well as, eliminate confusion. This will provide the Southlake it be for school board, County, State or Federal elections. already been voting in Denton County for every other type of election whether Denton County voters some consistency in their polling places since they have Although the primary purpose of this agenda item is to call the May election, the resolution references some contract changes that I want to make you aware of at this time. For the past several years, the Tarrant County Elections Administrator, Steve Raborn, has combined our Denton County voters into his election for the purposes of voting for Southlake City Council members. Those same voters have then been required to go to a Denton County polling place to vote in the Northwest ISD elections and other elections. Until now, the Denton County Elections Administrator did not offer Joint Election Contracts. In order for the approximately 417 Denton County registered voters in Southlake to receive a ballot, Tarrant County Elections had to hand-key each voter’s information into their system. This was a very time consuming effort on his staff. The new Denton County Elections Administrator, Frank Phillips, now offers Joint Election Contracts, and as a result, Tarrant County has informed us that they can no longer combine our Denton County voters into their system. It is my recommendation that City Council also approve a Joint Election Contract with Denton County. By doing so, the Southlake Denton County voters will be able to vote for City Council as well as for the NWISD school board on one ballot at any Denton County polling place during Early Voting (including the Trophy Club Municipal Building) and at the Trophy Club 4 Municipal Building on Election Day. This allows the voter to vote on one ballot at one location, which will save them time, effort and encourage more We will communicate the polling location change to our Denton County residents by using Connect CTY, the City Newsletter, SPIN, and possibly even mailing out a post card. 5 Thank you for your attention.
