Item 4H M E M O R A N D U M September 8, 2008 TO: Shana Yelverton, City Manager FROM: Chris Tribble, Interim Director of Community Services Approve Southlake Parks Development Corporation (SPDC) SUBJECT: matching funds request from the Bob Jones Nature Center organization in the amount of $1,500 for the purchase of classroom furniture for the Bob Jones Nature Center & Preserve Action Requested: City Council review and approval of SPDC Matching Funds request from the Bob Jones Nature Center organization in the amount of $1,500 for the purchase of classroom furniture for the Bob Jones Nature Center & Preserve. Background Information: The Bob Jones Nature Center Board has requested matching funds to purchase classroom furniture for the lower classroom at the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve. The Board received a grant from the Greater Southlake Women’s Society in the amount of $1,000 and the Southlake Newcomer’s Club in the amount of $500 to purchase classroom furniture. The Board is requesting matching funds to purchase (1) two station easel, (2) toddler fold and locks, (1) twenty tray mobile cubbies with clear trays and (4) four foot adjustable tables for a total of $3,000. The furniture is lightweight, movable and foldable which allows for flexibility to use the space for other activities when needed. The furniture is made by Sproutz and is considered “green furniture.” It is made of recycled wood fiber, uses formaldehyde-free resin and meets the most stringent formaldehyde emission standards in the world (CHPS01350), and ® has an environmentally KYDZSafe finish. Financial Considerations: SPDC Matching Funds in the amount of $200,000 are approved in the Fiscal Year 2008 budget. To date, $118,419 has been allocated for other projects. If approved in the amount of $1,500 ($3,000 total), an unencumbered balance of approximately $78,581 would remain. Financial Impact: Not Applicable. Citizen Input/ Board Review: Park Board recommended approval (8-0) at their September 8, 2008 meeting. SPDC will consider request prior to City Council at the September 16 meeting.
