Item 4F M E M O R A N D U M September 8, 2008 TO: Shana Yelverton, City Manager FROM: Chris Tribble, Interim Director of Community Services Approve Southlake Parks Development Corporation (SPDC) SUBJECT: matching funds request from Southlake Historical Society in the amount $1,000 for the restoration of a historical wagon Action Requested: City Council review and approval of SPDC Matching Funds request from Southlake Historical Society in the amount of $1,000 for the restoration of a historical wagon. Background Information: The Southlake Historical Society donated the logs of a historical cabin to the City this past May to be restored on the hill in Bicentennial Park. As part of their consideration for donation it was also stipulated that the cabin be restored as historically accurately as possible, “with consideration to present day techniques that promise the cabin structure will last for future generations.” To date, the City has approved SPDC Matching Funds in the amount of $7,500 for the addition of a rock fire place and back porch for the log cabin. The wagon being considered is of a similar historic period, and is being refurbished. Upon acceptance of this consider item, the wagon, after being refurbished, will become property of the City of Southlake and will be available for viewing in the area adjacent to the log cabin to complement the structure with a historic artifact. Financial Considerations: SPDC Matching Funds in the amount of $200,000 are approved in the Fiscal Year 2008 budget. To date, $118,419 has been allocated for other projects. If approved in the amount of $1,000 ($2,000 total), an unencumbered balance of $79,581 would remain. Financial Impact: N/A. Citizen Input/ Board Review: Park Board reviewed request August 11, 2008 and recommended approval 5-0. SPDC will consider prior to City Council September 16, 2008. Almost everything a family needed to make a new start in Texas – from clothes to seeds to tools – was packed into their wagon. The family that donated this wagon had over the years replaced dilapidated boards with lumber-yard wood. Restoration expert Bill Marquis will replace the lumber-yard wood with old wood and other period-correct touches.
