Southlake Senior Advisory Commission
Board Report September 2009
Services
Senior Activity Center Expansion The Senior Advisory Board (SAC) is very excited about the addition
Î
of 1000 sq ft to the current Senior Activity Center, and staffs ability to provide a higher level of service
then is currently possible. Although it is possible that we may see in increase in usage we have seen that
we reach a very high percentage of Southlake Seniors currently (much more so then most communities).
The expansion will primarily allow the seniors to be able to eat in the same room and enjoy each others
company at the weekly luncheons and allow staff more flexibility in programming the space. Currently
Tuesday luncheons are being held at White Chapel United Methodist Church until the expansion is
complete.
CARS The CARS regeneration that has been occurring over the last year seems to be taking hold. We
Î
now have a stable board, and are providing first class customer service to our riders, and have seen
increases in usage over the same period last year for the past 3 or 4 months. The CARS board is
brochures to area hospitals and medical establishments.
Program Expansion The Senior Center is looking at program expansion outside of the friendly (but
Î
restrictive) confines of the facility. We have just initiated breakfast for seniors at the Nature Center
which will be a monthly program. Short hikes and presentations will be provided on subjects related to
our natural world. Pastries and coffee out in the wilds what a great start for the day. The recent Soc Hop
in Town Hall had a great turnout and was well received. APEX is also working with the Senior Center to
develop arts programs for seniors including possibly a painting class at the Nature Center. The sky is the
limit and staff is developing new ways to provide the great service we are all striving for.
Expanding relationship with Watermere The Senior Advisory Council plan on having their next
Î
Commission meeting in Watermere, as is the CARS Board. Amanda Troum and Kerry McGeath have
been working with Watermere staff since the Isle of Watermere opened, and Library/Senior Center
combined outreach include a virtual branch, and monthly book talks and other programs. CARS is also
beginning to provide service to Watermere seniors and the CARS Board sees that as an area of future
growth. They also bring buses of seniors from Watermere to the library, as well as to the recent Sock
Hop in Town Hall.
Wifi in the Senior Center We have recently made wifi available at the Senior center which allows
Î
many more options with regard to providing computer training at the center, and it allows seniors to
bring their own laptops with them for any number of applications or reasons. It is great to have the
freedom to enjoy the facility and be able to access your own laptop.
Empowering seniors and the 2030 plan What the senior value most is to be empowered and
Î
be involved in the community and SAC has expressed an interest in involvement in the 2030 plan and
would appreciate any possible role in its development.
Any questions for staff please contact Kerry McGeath (8384)
