Item 4E M E M O R A N D U M July 27, 2009 TO: Shana Yelverton, City Manager FROM: Chris Tribble, Director of Community Services Approve SPDC Matching Funds request from the Bob Jones SUBJECT: Nature Center organization in the amount of $550 for the purchase of benches for the patio Action Requested: City Council approval of SPDC Matching Funds request from the Bob Jones Nature Center Organization in the amount of $550 ($1,100 total) for the purchase of benches for the patio. Background Information: Recall at the July 7, 2009 Council meeting, the council approved of an identical request from the Bob Jones Nature Center organization to match grant funds they received from the Greater Southlake Women’s Society to purchase four patio benches. Recently, the Bob Jones Nature Center organization received another grant, from the Southlake Newcomers Club, to purchase additional benches for the Nature Center and Preserve patio area. The new benches are made of 100% recycled plastic beverage bottles that have been manufactured into maintenance free ‘Poly Lumber.’ The product is non-toxic, UV resistant and comes with a lifetime warranty. The benches are currently listed at $275 apiece for a total of $1,100 for four. Financial Considerations: SPDC Matching Funds in the amount of $200,000 are approved in the Fiscal Year 2009 budget. To date, $6,100 in matching funds has been approved and allocated as follows: • $2,500 ($5,000 total) to Southlake Historical Society to purchase furnishings for the log cabin • $550 ($1,100 total) to Bob Jones Nature Center organization to purchase four benches for the nature center patio. 4E- 1 Shana Yelverton, City Manager Meeting Date – August 4, 2009 Page 2 of 4 If the current request for $550 ($1,100 total) from the Bob Jones Nature organization to purchase additional benches is granted, an unencumbered balance of approximately $192,800 would remain in the Matching Funds budget.
