Item 4IM E M O R A N D U M July 1, 2009 To: Shana Yelverton, City Manager From: Ken Baker, AICP – Director of Planning & Development Services Subject: Resolution No. 09-042, Appoint members to the Wayfinding Sign Committee of the Southlake 2030 Plan. Action Requested: Appoint two City Council members to the Wayfinding Sign Committee. Background Information: One of the recommendations of the Major Corridors Urban Design Plan is to create a wayfinding signage system that directs drivers and pedestrians to important destinations, heightens interest by highlighting key attractions, and reinforces community identity with repeated forms, colors, and text fonts. As a first step to implement this recommendation, the city issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for a Wayfinding Signage Plan in March 2009. The city has allocated $10,000 in FY09 and proposes $40,000 in FY10 for the plan, funded by the Hotel Occupancy Tax. Staff requests the appointment of two City Council members to serve on the Wayfinding Sign Committee. This committee will select a consulting firm and oversee the development of the Wayfinding Signage Plan. Financial Considerations: None. Strategic Link: Mobility & Quality Development. Supporting Documents: Resolution No. 09-042 Wayfinding Sign Presentation RESOLUTION NO. 09-042 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTHLAKE, TEXAS, APPOINTING MEMBERS TO A WAYFINDING SIGN COMMITTEE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on February 5, 2008, the City Council for the City of Southlake, Texas, approved Resolution No. 08-004, adopting the Urban Design Plan as an element of the City’s Comprehensive Master Plan; and WHEREAS, the Urban Design Plan recommends the development of a wayfinding signage system that directs drivers and pedestrians to important destinations, heightens interest by highlighting key attractions, and reinforces community identity with repeated forms, colors, and text fonts; and WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the importance of developing a Wayfinding Signage Plan to implement the recommendation of the Urban Design Plan; and WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the importance of establishing a Wayfinding Sign Committee to oversee the development of such a plan; and WHEREAS, the Wayfinding Sign Committee’s responsibilities shall include selecting a consultant to develop the Wayfinding Signage Plan, overseeing the development of the Wayfinding Signage Plan and other duties as may be determined by the City Council. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTHLAKE, TEXAS, THAT: Section 1.A Wayfinding Sign Committee is hereby established. Section 2. All of the findings in the preamble are found to be true and correct and the City Council hereby incorporates said findings into the body of this resolution as if copied in their entirety. Section 3.The City Council hereby appoints the following members to the Southlake Wayfinding Sign Committee: Section 4.
