IBC CHAPTER 9 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS Section 903 - Automatic Sprinkler System 903.3.1.1 NFPA 13 Sprinkler System: • Where provisions of this code require that a building or portion thereof be equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with this section, sprinklers shall be installed throughout in accordance with NFPA 13 except as provided in Section 903.3.1.1.1 (when approved by the fire code official) 903.4 Sprinkler System Supervision and Alarms: • All valves on the building side of the water meter controlling the water supply for automatic sprinkler systems, pumps, tanks, water levels and temperatures, critical air pressures and waterflow switches on all sprinkler systems shall be electrically supervised by a listed fire alarm control unit. Sprinkler and standpipe system water-flow detectors must be provided for each floor tap to the sprinkler system and must cause an alarm upon detection of water flow for more than 45 seconds. All control valves in the sprinkler and standpipe systems except for fire department hose connection valves must be electrically supervised to initiate a supervisory signal at thecentral station upon tampering. Section 905 - Standpipe Systems 905.3.1 Height: • Class III standpipe systems are required throughout buildings where highest level exceeds 30 feet. • Exception 1: Class I standpipes are allowed with sprinklers. 905.4 Location of Class I Standpipe Hose Connections: • In every required exit stairway, a hose connection shall be provided for each story above and below grade. Hose connections shall be located at an intermediate landing between stories, unless otherwise approved by the fire code official. • When required by this chapter, standpipe connections shall be places adjacent to all required exits to the structure and at 200 foot intervals along major corridors thereafter, or as otherwise approved by the fire code official. Section 906 - Portable Fire Extinguishers Table 906.3 Fire Extinguishers for Class A Fire Hazards: • Maximum travel distance to extinguisher is 75 feet. Section 907 - Fire Alarm and Detection Systems 907.5.2.2 Emergency Voice/alarm Communication System: • Emergency voice/alarm communication systems required by this code shall be designed and installed in accordance with NFPA 72 907.5.2.3.1 Public Use Areas and Common Use Areas: • Visible alarm notification appliances shall be provided in public use areas and common use areas. Section 1003 - General Means of Egress 1003.2 Ceiling Height: • Ceiling shall not be less than 7 ft 6 in 1003.3 Protruding Objects: • Protruding objects are permitted to extend below the ceiling to a min. of 80 inches, not more than 50% of the ceiling area shall be reduced 1003.3.3 Horizontal Projections: • Structural elements, fixtures, or furnishings shall not project horizontally from either side more than 4 inches over any walking surface between the heights of 27-8 inches Section 1004 - Occupant Load 1004.1 Design Occupant Load: • In determining means of egress requirements, the number of occupants for whom means of egress facilities are provided shall be determines in accordance with this section. (See Table 1004.5) 1004.7 Outdoor Areas: • Yards, patios, courts and similar outdoor areas accessible to ad usable by the building occupants shall be provided with means of egress as required by this chapter. The occupant load of such outdoor areas shall be assigned by the building official in accordance with the anticipated use. Where outdoor areas are to be used by persons in addition to the occupants of the building, and the path of egress travel from the outdoor areas passes through the building, means of egress requirements for the building shall be based on the sum of the occupant loads of the building plus the outdoor areas. Section 1005 - Means of Egress Sizing 1005.3 Required Egress Width: • Doors capacity factor will be reduced to 0.15 inches per occupant, and stairway capacity factor will be reduced to 0.2 inches per occupant from including automatic sprinklers and emergency voice/alarm system per 907.5.2.2 1005.5 Distribution of Egress Capacity: • The means of egress shall be configured so that the loss of any one exit shall not reduce the available capacity to less than 50% of the required capacity. Section 1006 - Number of Exits and Exit Access Doorways Table 1006.2.1 Common Path of Egress Travel Distance: • Maximum 75 ft for occupancy type A with automatic sprinkler system 1006.3.3 Egress Based on Occupancy Load: • Each story and occupied roof shall have the minimum number of independent exits, or access to exits, as specified in Table 1006.3.3 (See Table 1006.3.3) Section 1007 - Exit and Exit Access Doorway Configuration 1007.1.1 Two Exits or Exit Access Doorways: • Where a building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 or 903.3.1.2, the separation distance shall be not less than 1/3rd of the length of the maximum overall diagonal dimension of the area served.
