MEMORANDUM
October 24, 2007
TO: Members of the Southlake Library Board
FROM: Kerry McGeath, City Librarian — Deputy Director Community Services
(817) 748 8384
SUBJECT: Agenda Item Comments and Other Items of Interest — October 24, 2007 Library
Board Meeting
Agenda Item No.2 Al Administrative Comments. Librarians Report
• The library has recorded a number of Podcasts that are available on the library portion of the
city's website. We are in the process of developing a significant number of Podcasts soon to be
including The Southlake FIistorical Society's oral history project that the library has been
supporting for a number of years. Podcasts from the Bob Jones Nature Center will also be
included, and of course content from the library as well — we currently have recorded a number of
songs used in the library's popular children's storytimes.
• City Librarian and Deputy Director McGeath was named to the Texas Library Association
Visioning Task Force steering committee. He is one of a select few librarians chosen from
throughout the state to begin the process of looking at how libraries will need to change to be
effective over the next 25 years. The Task Force had the first meeting in Southlake — they enjoyed
the city and as a result several of the future meetings will take place in Southlake. Mr. McGeath is
also the incoming President of the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (an affiliate of
TML).
• The drive up bookdrop will be placed in the next two to four weeks. The most consistent
customer concern is to have a drive up bookdrop so they would not have to get out of the car to
drop off their materials, since parking can be tough around the Town Hall Building. It will be
positioned at the south end of the west parking garage across the road from Robb and Stuckey's
rear or east entrance.
• The library is continuing to display art from each of the Carroll School District campuses through
the remainder of the year. CISD received a grant for museum quality panels to display art in
various locations. Staff continues to be excited about the excellent works of art that have been
exhibited thus far.
Agenda Item No.2 A2. Library Statistics — Please review the attached or included library statistics.
A hard copy will be available for review at the upcoming meeting. Some year end stats:
• Checkouts: The Library saw a 15% increase in circulation for the year with 265,461 items checked
out over last year, and was up 33% over the two year period. That was the highest in the State for a

comparable community of our size (83,000 items checked out in 03/04). Staff calculates 16,721
people have library cards which is about 70% or so of the population
• Programming: Programming was up 32% over last year with 18,865 people attending our programs
for the period. The library was up 76% over the two year period. 92,000 people visited the library in
the last Fiscal Year.
• Volunteer Hours: The library was up 5% in volunteer hours over last year with 2,741 hours, and was
up 36% over the two year period
Agenda Item No.3, Approval of minutes: September minutes are included, if not included they will
be available at the meeting
Agenda Item No. 6, Discussion:
• Grant Opportunities - we will review a number of options that may be available to us. We
are asking for help particularly in identifying local grant opportunities (but will accept
regional of national opportunities as well). Secondarily if we could look at someone writing
the grants for us it would be helpful, but not as important as identifying the grants.
• Advocacy opportunities - we will have a list of upcoming events in Southlake that each of
you may be able to attend in order to advocate (passively or otherwise) for the library. We
can discuss other opportunities as well.
• Adult and Youth Programming update - we will go through our process for developing our
programming schedule and talk about our successes and failures.
• Opportunities for the future - we are going to be re -focusing on providing the best customer
service experience possible, and looking at ways to strengthen our position within the
community as an innovator.
Other Items
• Friends of the Library (FOSL) update. We are appreciative of their efforts to help us
purchase our new bookdrop and all the things they do for us.
• North Texas Regional Library System (NTRLS) update. Kerry McGeath has been re-
appointed to the Services Planning Committee for NTRL.
