Agenda Item No. 2. Discussion: A. Guest Presentation – This item is a standing item on the agenda to allow a guest from the community or the City government to make a presentation to the Commission about current issues of concern to seniors in Southlake. Southlake City Councilmember Martin Schelling has confirmed he will be the guest speaker at the May 8 SAC meeting. B. Suggested SAC meeting time change to 9:00am– This item was placed on the agenda at the request of some SAC members at the April meeting. 2. Agenda Item No. 3. Reports: A. Metroport Meals on Wheels Report – This item is a standing item on the agenda to allow for an update and report on the MMOW program. B. CARS Report– This item is a standing item on the agenda to allow for an update and report on the CARS program. C. Southlake Steering Committee- This item is a standing item in order for the Commission members to receive information about monthly events and activities at the Senior Center and within the Steering Committee . D. Southlake Senior Funding, Inc. – This item is a standing item on the agenda to allow for an update and report on Southlake Senior Funding, Inc., (SSFI). E. City Manager’s Office – This is a standing item on the agenda to allow for an update from the City’s Communications and Website Manager Pilar Sch ank about current developments. F. Senior Advisory Commission Written Reports to Council – As a reminder, the next Senior Advisory Commission written report to City Council is scheduled August 7. Staff will prepare a draft report for SAC to preview and provi de feedback at a meeting preceding the presentation at City Council. Guest Schedule – The following schedule of speakers has been arranged:  June 12 Representative from U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant’s Office  July 10 Director of Public Works Bob Price (may be moved to August if July SAC meeting canceled) Please advise staff of your suggestions for speakers for future SAC meetings so guests may be invited and confirmed in advance. 3. Agenda Item No. 4A. Consent: Approval of the April 10, 2012 regular Senior Advisory Commission meeting minutes. Corrections to the minutes should be included as part of the motion during the meeting. 4. Agenda Item No. 5. Public Forum – This is the public's opportunity to address the Commission about non-agenda items. During this proceeding it is important that the Commission not deliberate (discuss among yourselves) or take action on any item brought up at this time. The Commissions' options during this topic are 1) to listen, 2) ask questions and respond to the presenter only, 3) request staff to look into the issue and report back to the Commission and/or 4) request that the Chair put the item on a future agenda for the Commission to discuss or consider. 5. Call to Order – The meeting was called to order by Chairman 25 Baltimore at 1:24 p.m. 26 27 Agenda Item No. 1. Discussion 28 29 A. Guest Presentation – Texas Health Partners Resources (Harris HEB) 30 president Traci Bernard and marketing director Laura Fuqua presented 31 background and historical information about the Southlake hospital, as 32 well as general surgical services available. Ms. Bernard responded to 33 questions regarding health plans, including Medicare. 34 35 B. Hiring process for senior services coordinator position – This item was 36 requested at the March SAC meeting; however, there was no discussion 37 at this meeting. 38 39 The reports section of the meeting will be handled different than previously presented. 40 In an effort to manage time more efficiently, the reporting entities (ie. Reports 7 8 A. Metroport Meals on Wheels Report – The MMOW reports were 9 distributed. 10 11 B. Call A Ride Southlake Report – Neal Perkin distributed the March CARS 12 report pointing out that ridership is down. CARS hosted their 3rd Annual 13 Volunteer Driver’s Appreciation dinner, which was well attended. Concern 14 was expressed that rising gas prices may have a negative effect on 15 volunteer drivers. The issue may be considered when the community 16 services agreement with CARS is renewed for 2013 if deemed necessary 17 by CARS, based on their operating plan and demonstrated need. 18 19 C. Southlake Steering Committee (SSC) – Bernie McCauley provided a brief 20 report. The Mother’s Day lunch will feature brunch-type food, the Father’s 21 Day lunch will feature barbeque and Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated at 22 the May 1 luncheon. The Treasurer reported $3,000 in their checking 23 account. SSC will elect officers. There was also discussion about the 24 Center being open on Fridays, depending upon demand and the budget. 25 The ROMEO’s went to McAllister in March. 26 27 D. Southlake Senior Funding, Inc. – Dick McCauley reported on the progress 28 and discussion of the multipurpose community facility held Southlake 2030 29 Parks, Recreation & Open Space/Community Facilities Master Plan 30 meeting on April 9, 2012. 31 32 The Commission talked about adding an item to the May SAC meeting 33 agenda to formally let the City Council know the Senior Advisory 34 Commission supports being part of the multi-purpose facility. 35 36 E. City Manager’s Office & Community Services – Communications & 37 Website Manager Pilar Schank provided a report. 38 39 Voting information regarding May 12 Election was provided. SPIN will host 40 a Candidate’s Forum Monday, April 16, in Town Hall Council Chambers. 41 Art In the Square is April 27-29 at Town Square. Bicentennial Park 42 received a merit award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of 43 Landscape Architects for its design and construction. For more information, 1 visit MySouthlakeNews.com website. Median construction along FM 1709 2 is complete; deceleration lane construction is being done at several 3 locations. Updates on construction projects and opening of new 4 restaurants and businesses in Southlake may be found at 5 MySouthlakeNews.com. Concern about U-turns at medians were 6 expressed. Commission members were advised to email Gaylon Music, 7 DPS sergeant-traffic division, at gmusic@ci.southlake.tx.us with any 8 concerns or traffic questions. 9 10 F. Senior Advisory Commission Report to Council – Written Senior Advisory 11 Commission reports to City Council will be included in the council packets 12 for the first meetings in January, April, August and October annually. The 13 next written SAC report to City Council will be August 7, 2012. SAC will 14 have an opportunity to preview the report at their July 10 meeting. 15 16 The Commission requested an item on the next SAC meeting agenda to 17 discuss canceling of the July SAC meeting and to determine other 18 meeting dates that may be canceled or rescheduled. 19 20 G. Guest Schedule – Council member Martin Schelling will be the guest 21 speaker at the May SAC meeting and Public Works Director Bob Price is 22 scheduled in June; however, Deputy Director Happold will contact Mr. 23 Price to see if his guest appearance may be moved to allow a 24 representative from Kenny Marchant’s office at the June SAC meeting to 25 talk about Medicare issues. 26 27 Agenda Item No. 3A.
