2001-02-13 CITY OF SOUTHLAKE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION February 13, 2001- Senior Activity Center MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES PRESENT: Chairperson, Jeane Alexander, David Baltimore, Darla Lattimore, Connie Montague, Jerry Montague, Tom Furey, Linda Moore MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES ABSENT: Bill Cosgrove, Linda Forbes EX OFFICIO MEMBERS AND GUESTS PRESENT: Sonja Allen, MMOW STAFF PRESENT: Joanne Leek, Community Services Coordinator Agenda Item No. 1, Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chair Jeane Alexander at 1:15 p.m. Agenda Item No. 2 Approval of January 9, 2001 Minutes Tom Furey moved that the minutes be accepted. The motion was seconded by Connie Montague and approved unanimously. Agenda Item No. 3, Administrative Comments Joanne introduced information regarding United Way's Steering Committee for NE Tarrant County. A brief discussion followed regarding two legislative bills - one aimed at establishing a "211" information line for health and human services concerns and services and the other at curbing telemarketing companies - especially those that target senior citizens and disabled. Following conversation regarding the proposed new recreation center and library project - members decided they would like to have Kevin Hugman and perhaps someone from the Parks Board to come and discuss with the Commission the plans and time frame for this project. Agenda Item No. 4, Report: Southlake Senior Activities Tom Furey reported on the activity highlights for the month of January. Among the highlights were the oil painting class, Ruby and her mouse/keyboard class, the book review and the video on wheelchair assistance for caregivers. In addition, Tom reported that CARS received their appropriation from the Council. Agenda Item No. 5. Report: Metroport Meals on Wheels Sonja Allen presented her report for January. The food cost from Mimi's was higher than expected. Attendance is going up. Several other restaurants were discussed as possible alternatives for food source. Agenda Item No. 6, Discussion NACommunity Services\Seniors\Minutes\02-13-Ol.doc Senior Health Care Concerns defined - Discussion followed regarding narrowing down health care concerns to health care insurance and access to appropriate care. It was decided that Joanne will contact Vicki Truitt's office here in Southlake and set up a time when she could come and meet with the Senior Advisory Commission members. AP-enda Item No. 7. Open Forum David Baltimore offered information regarding the Tax Aide program, which is underway each Thursday morning until April 15th.
