Agenda Item No. 1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair David Baltimore at 1:15 p.m.
Agenda Item No. 2 Approval of July 10, 2001 Minutes
Linda moved and Tom seconded the motion to approve the minutes. They were approved
unanimously.
Agenda Item No. 3 Guest: Steve Polasek: Steve gave an update on the progress of the library
and the natatorium as well as the changes at the tennis center. The library is tentatively planning
to open towards the end of September. At the present time there are about 10,000 pieces of
materials, looking to expand to 30,000 by January and then finally 50,000 materials available in
the 10,000 square foot facility. The Southlake Library is a part of the North Texas Library
System. It is unclear if the cooperative agreement with Grapevine will go beyond September 30thInitially the library will be open approximately 30 hours per week and then progress to the regular
44 hours per week. An excellent staff is on board and ready and eager to serve. The grand
opening will be in November.
The natatorium is nearing completion. As this pool was built with community and CISD monies,
a joint use agreement between the school and the community will be determined through the
aquatics committee. This committee consists of Steve Polasek, Steve Moore and Kevin Hugman.
Policies and procedures are being developed. The temperature of the pool is to remain at 800,
which Steve Polasek felt would be warm enough for the seniors. The actual facility is huge and
can accommodate several activities and groups together. Full service locker rooms will be
available for all to use. It is planned that the pool will be open in November.
The tennis center has undergone some changes in personnel. The Management Company will not
be running the day to day operations any longer. The City of Southlake will take responsibility
for the management and the operations of the center. Steve stated that there would not be any
interruption in services and many of the same employees will remain on staff.
Steve also reported on the progress of Bob Jones Park and the status of the proposed Recreation
Center. The park is moving right on track and this phase will be completed by October. A grant
was submitted for the Recreation Center and hopefully it will get approved.
Agenda Item No. 3 Guest: Steve Lakin: Steve explained all about Call A Ride of Southlake -
CARS. CARS is available for transportation of seniors to the center, food store, hairdresser,
library, doctor's appt., or just about anywhere they would like to go. This service is free to the
seniors. Many seniors, however, do make donations to CARS for their rides. This is a much-
needed service for the seniors in Southlake as no other transportation is available. Steve spoke
briefly on the need for more volunteer drivers and for contributions to CARS to keep the van in
good working order. Most volunteers utilize their own vehicles to transport seniors, however
CARS does have a wheelchair accessible van. The process for accessing CARS services is very
simple and requires only a brief interview to gather information and then the senior just needs to
call a few days ahead to schedule a ride. Many of our Southlake seniors use CARS to come to
the center on Tuesdays.
Agenda Item No. 4 Metrouort Meals on Wheels
Mary distributed the report for July. She also spoke of Sonja's resignation and the plans of
MMOW to select a replacement. Sonja's last day will be 9/4/01. Mary spoke of the good fortune
of MMOW in being able to secure a wonderful building for their headquarters. It will still be in
Roanoke.
Agenda Item No. 5 Administrative Comments
Programs and trips for the fall were discussed. Getting reliable, affordable transportation for
trips is difficult. In an effort to be able to offer more trips to Southlake Seniors, we will be
partnering with Colleyville and Keller in order to be able to access better buses for events. A
number of trips are planned including the Texas State Fair and Oklahoma. City. The classes for
the fall are being organized with the starting of all classes the second week of September. Joanne
passed out the yearly report for the Senior Advisory Commission.
Agenda Item No. 6 Southlake Senior Activities
Tom reported on the many activities for July to keep everyone busy at the center. Among the
highlights were the Sing-A-Longs, Music Lovers, book reviews, breakfast club, computer lab and
the many opportunities to meet at the center for fellowship.
Agenda Item No. 7 Onen Forum
A discussion was held regarding excess food from the Tuesday program and how to store it
safely. Steve Lakin offered that he has a commercial type freezer that he would donate to the
center however, it is not in working order and would need some work. Bill Kyle volunteered to
look it over if the city said the center could have it. Further discussion was held regarding getting
a freezer for the center from the memorial funds. As some member of the Senior Advisory
Commission were not aware of the memorial fund it was suggested that Joanne obtain more
information as to the amount in that fund and the procedure for accessing those funds.
A discuss followed regarding the election of officers. The following members were nominated:
Chair - Jeane Alexander, Vice Chair - David Baltimore and Secretary - Connie Montague. This
slate will be presented at the next meeting with nominations from the floor and then the vote will
be taken.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 3:20 PM.
