SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION
March 12, 2002 Senior Activity Center

Agenda Item No. 1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m.
Agenda Item No. 2 Approval of the 01/08/02 Minutes:
Bill Cosgrove moved and Cleta seconded the motion to approve the minutes. They were
approved unanimously.
Agenda Item No. 3 Administrative Comments:
Joanne discussed the upcoming trips - Rusk State Park/Palestine is sold out and we have a
waiting list. We will begin taking names for the Mineral Wells- Clark's Secret Garden trip in
May. Our local trip to the Amon Carter Museum was well attended. The Alaska Cruise set for
August 18-24 is filling up.
Agenda Item No. 4 Southlake Senior Activities:
Tom reported on the many activities at the Senior Center. Among the highlights were classes at
the Aquatic Center, which offers walk-in swimming and registration for classes. The fees are low
and classes are available for the seniors. Also music lover's, book review with Ruby Hill, the
Charity Ball, and the Southlake Library activities were mentioned.
Agenda Item No. 5 Metrouort Meals on Wheels (MMOW
Again, the numbers are looking very good and the quality of the meals has been great. Everyone
is pleased with the Tuesday lunch program.
Agenda Item No. 6 911 Cell Phone Protect:
Bill Kyle reported on the wonderful success of this project. To date we have given out 52
phones. In inventory we have 24 sets ready to be given with nearly 20 more sets to be ready
shortly. We have a number of phone items to be matched and tested. In addition, we have 23
Mobil9l 1 devices to give out to seniors. These devices were donated by Brink's Home Security.
Agenda Item No. 7 Policies and Procedures Committee:
This committee of Cleta and David met to draft any changes to the Policies and Procedures for
the Senior Activity Center. Jerry was unavailable. It was decided to add a sentence to clarify the
policies and procedures already written. Regarding the Center use policy a statement was added:
To the extent to which these procedures conflict with those adopted by any other policies
determined by the City of Southlake, the Senior Activity Center Use Policy will prevail. And
under damages: Failure to comply may result in forfeiture of the security deposit and denial of
further use of the facility. These clarifications will be presented to Steve Polasek, Deputy
Director, Community Services.
Agenda Item No. 8 CARS Van Usage Committee:
Jeane and David attended the CARS Board meeting on February 27th. The CARS van is available
for use on the days that it is not needed for the wheelchair client. However, everyone who rides
in the van must be a CARS client and reside in Southlake.
Agenda Item No. 9 Open Forum:
Linda mentioned that the Southlake Library could use some help in putting out the new book
arrivals. She said that volunteering for this activity is fairly easy and even those who need to sit
could get the books ready for the shelves.
A discussion followed regarding the Remington Retirement facility. The new plan passed the
Planning and Zoning Commission by 5-1. Several seniors were at the meeting and voiced their
support for this type of facility to be built in Southlake. Now the plan goes to the City Council.
All of the Senior Advisory Commission members were called in advance of the meeting.
Marge brought up discussion regarding the purchase of a teacart for the center. Cleta also
discussed the possibility of purchasing an electric griddle for center use. Cleta moved and Bill
Cosgrove seconded the motion to approve these purchases from the memorial fund. The motion
carried. Next step will be to bring it before the memorial committee.
