2002-09-10 CITY OF SOUTHLAKE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION September 10, 2002- Senior Activity Center MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES PRESENT: Jeane Alexander, David Baltimore, Tom Furey, Marge Kyle, Bill Kyle, Linda Moore and Cleta Pierce MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES ABSENT: Diana Collins, Bill Cosgrove, Connie Montague and Jerry Montague EX OFFICIO MEMBERS AND GUESTS PRESENT: Josh Weiser - President Senior Steering Committee, and Fran Lois Evans, Idilea Johnston and Jean Boland - Fact Finding Transportation Committee Dala Mulholland, Mary Bianci - MMOW STAFF PRESENT: Joanne Leek - Community Services Coordinator Agenda Item No. 1, Call to Order The Meeting was called to order at 1:20 p.m. Agenda Item No. 2, Approval of Officers for New Near: Cleta moved for approval as nominated and Linda seconded. Unanimously approved. Agenda Item No. 3, Approval of the 8/13/02 Minutes: David moved and Cleta seconded the motion to approve the minutes. They were approved unanimously Agenda Item No. 4, Administrative Comments: Joanne reported: • United Way is conducting a public transportation study on the merits of the present system and possible need for additional service. It is suggested we write them letters expressing our feelings on the matter, i.e., needs and concerns. • CARS - An addendum has been drafted, but not yet presented to CARS Board, regarding use and residency requirement for use of the van. • Unanimous approval of Metroport budget for $10,000 for fiscal year 2002/03. • February 4, 2003 has been designated Senior Day at the State Capitol in Austin. Cleta Pierce has volunteered to coordinate the activities, including transportation. Bill Kyle has offered to assist. • The Area Agency On Aging Conference will be September 27, 2002 at the Fort Worth Health Association. Representative Howard Stone, our "Silver Haired Legislator", will make a presentation. A Agenda Item No. 5, Southlake Senior Activities: Tom reported on the various activities taking place at the Center. Among the highlights was the recent Alaskan cruise and the impending "Blithe Spirit" play to be held in Denton. Agenda Item No. 6, Metroport Meals on Wheels (MMOW): Dala informed us that Linda Braun was back in school and would not be available, at this time, for further MMOW activities. Mary Bianci is our new coordinator. Mary hails from California and brings with her a wealth of experience with senior citizens. It includes over 25 years of service with VNA which included Clinical Social Worker, Long-Term- Care authority, Hospice Care and Insurance Consultant. Dala says Metroport is contemplating an expanded menu. Agenda Item No. 7, Discussion: Southlake Seniors Steering Committee - Bus Potential: Josh and the Fact Finding Committee on Transportation presented an in depth report on the feasibility of obtaining a 15/25-passenger bus. Much discussion ensued and some suggestions to defray the cost of the vehicle were made, e.g., corporate donations, advertising and possible use of Memorial Fund monies. Members of the Southlake Senior Activities Center will distribute survey Forms to interested seniors to obtain a consensus for the usage of such a vehicle. Dala said that in some areas AARP has provided drivers for up to 20 hours per week. However, at this time the program is not available in North East Tarrant County. She has some information on the subject that she will provide to us. Agenda Item No. 8, Open Forum: David reported that the Senior Leadership Club of North East Tarrant County meets at 9:00 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Colleyville Chamber of Commerce and all senior citizens are invited. Also, the SALT Conference will be held on October 4, 2002, from 9.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a break for lunch and prizes. Detailed information is forthcoming. Celphone activities continue at a slower pace and Brinks Home Security has contributed additional 911 phones. We are grateful for their help. We can expect an article to appear in the Monday issue of The Star Telegram.
