1998-08-11 CITY OF SOUTHLAKE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION August 11, 1998 Senior Activity Center MEMBERS PRESENT: Chairman Bill Cosgrove, Fran Weiser, Linda Moore, Matalyn Smith, Jeane Alexander, Tom Ward MEMBERS ABSENT: Betsy Horowitz, Martha Greenberg EX OFFICIO MEMBERS AND GUESTS PRESENT: Rose Hampshire, Kelly Bradley, Joanne Leek STAFF PRESENT: Nona Whitehead, Community Services Coordinator The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bill Cosgrove at 1:20 p.m. Agenda Item No. 2, Approval of the Minutes for the 7/14/98 meeting Linda Moore made a motion to approve the minutes. Tom Ward seconded the motion and the minutes were approved unanimously. Agenda Item No. 3, Administrative Comments Nona Whitehead reported sidewalks would be constructed at the front and side of the parking lot. The back yard has had some fill and grading. Grass seeding needs to wait until the water restrictions are lifted. She reported that a she has received requests for a Shuffleboard Court and has sent that request to Parks and Recreation. Agenda Item No. 4, Presentation: Care Corps Joanne Leek, Director of Care Corps, presented information about this volunteer organization. Care Corps is funded by businesses, citizens, churches and civic organizations. Their mission is to preserve the independence and well being of the elderly in Northeast Tarrant County. They provide transportation, emergency repairs, and other services. The organization does have some volunteers and clients in Southlake. Seniors, age 60 and older, can call their number direct to request services. A van for a shopping trip at Grapevine Mills can be requested in advance. Care Corp will provide their statistics for our zip code. Agenda Item No. 5, Report: Metroport Meals on Wheels Rose Hampshire passed out the July statistics and Kelly Bradley passed out flyers on the Texas Boys Choir event. M Agenda Item No. 7, Report: Southlake Seniors Activities Fran Weiser reported that Lucia McCoy had attended their meeting to announce a special concert by the Texas Boys Choir, and that the Southlake Seniors had made a $125 donation to help Metroport Meals on Wheels fund the concert. December 15 will be the Christmas Party held at Countryside Bible Church and the September evening event will be another Western Flyers Dance and potluck. Nona is supposed to ask her daughter in-law Dara Whitehead if she would present a music program during the holidays. Agenda Item No. 8, Report: Transportation Committee Fran Weiser reported that the Transportation Committee had met and is planning a survey questionnaire for neighboring cities to determine what they are doing to meet the transportation needs of their seniors. The plan is for each committee member to contact one assigned city, once the survey form is designed. Nona mentioned that a database was now started that recorded the transportation services of Diana Collins and other volunteer drivers. Fran noted that the NETS data is low, but additional data can also be requested from Care Corps, once our seniors begin to call them. Agenda Item No. 9, Discussion Bylaws Revisions Nona presented the draft of the Bylaws revisions and noted that Assistant City Manager Shana Yelverton would need to review them before their acceptance. Jeane Alexander moved to accept the first draft. The motion was seconded by Tom Ward and approved unanimously. Following the review by Ms. Yelverton, the final draft will be on next month's agenda as a consideration item for approval. Agenda Item No. 10, Open Forum Bill Cosgrove was asked to check with Betsy Horowitz to be sure that she was still interested in serving on the Commission.
