1998-04-14 CITY OF SOUTHLAKE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION April 14, 1998 Old Union Room - Bicentennial Park MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Johnston, Chair; Martha Greenberg, Wanda Buschman, Fran Weiser, Linda Moore EX OFFICIO MEMBERS PRESENT: Rose Hampshire STAFF PRESENT: Shelli Siemer and Nona Whitehead, Community Services Coordinators The meeting was called to order by Chairman Dick Johnston at 1:07 p.m. Agenda Item No. 2, Approval of the March 10, 1998 Minutes Fran Weiser moved to approve the minutes. The motion was seconded by Martha Greenberg, and the minutes were approved unanimously. Agenda Item No. 3, Administrative Comments Shelli Siemer announced that since Nona Whitehead would be responsible for the activities at the Senior Activity Center, she will now assume the additional responsibilities as liaison with the Senior Advisory Commission. Nona Whitehead mentioned that Dick Johnston would review the wording of the Senior Advisory Ordinance Monday, April 20 at her desk. All members were encouraged to attend. This meeting was scheduled in order to get the proposed revised ordinance before the City Council by May 7, in time to get the extra appointment included the May appointments. Agenda Item No. 4, Presentation on City Street and House Signage Dick Johnston introduced Director of Public Works Bob Whitehead who presented information on signage. The readability of signs, both day and night was the first issue discussed. Mr. Whitehead indicated that the cost of painting and maintaining curb numbers was not something he would volunteer to add to his budget. He recommended that painting curbs could be a fund raiser for youth groups. Fran Weiser asked about having a requirement for readable house signs. Director Whitehead mentioned that Pamela Muller is working on the sign ordinance and might welcome input about that issue. Mr. Whitehead also addressed the issue of the size of street signs. Mr. Whitehead said that if residents notice signs that are faded, hard to read, or in need of replacement, they can call his department to request the sign be replaced. The newer signs are larger that the ones in the older subdivisions. Dick Johnston suggested that Fran Weiser write down any thoughts for a recommendation to the City Council regarding signage visibility needs of our senior residents. This issue will be a consideration item on next month's agenda. Agenda Item No. 5, Report: Metroport Meals On Wheels - March Stats Rose Hampshire passed out the report. 262 meals were served in March. 215 of the meals were served to seniors. Rose will be attending a Conference on Aging in April and will give a report to the Senior Advisory Commission in May. Dick Johnston asked about getting a report on home delivered meals. Rose Hampshire will look into getting those statistics. Agenda Item No. 5 Report: Senior Activity Center Renovation Project • Renovation Schedule Shelli Siemer reported that the flooring has been installed and the hardware and appliances were scheduled for this week. Major expenditures and projects remaining include asphalt and concrete. Open House Nona Whitehead reported that a personalized invitation is being sent to all civic groups who made major furnishing donations to the center. She reported that simple refreshments will be served and passed a sign up sheet for Commission members to help open house week. • Volunteer Recognition Shelli Siemer reported that April 30 is the day for the volunteer recognition event. There will be a ribbon cutting at 6:30 p.m. at the Sr. Activity Center. She requested that members of the Senior Advisory Commission be present for the ceremony. The center will be open from 5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. and the recognition event will be held in the cafeteria at Rockenbaugh School at 7:00 p.m. • June Programming Nona Whitehead reported that Aloha Payne is planning to present information about investment clubs in late June. She noted that Don Owens will be giving computer lessons and that Mary Hogar is working with Timarron to see about the possibilities of a water aerobics program. Agenda Item No. 7. Senior Living Community Dick Johnston reported that the zoning request for the retirement community is scheduled to come before Planning and Zoning on April 23. Nona Whitehead reported that Diana Hansen indicated that their organization will make their statistical/demographical data available once their zoning is in place. The Commission was in strong consensus concerning the need for affordable housing units in Southlake, as this is a stated goal for the Senior Advisory Commission. Agenda Item No. 8. Northeast Tarrant County Senior Issues Committee Martha Greenberg reported that she had the rough drafts of the Senior Issues Survey. The United Way meeting at the end of May will include a presentation on the results of the survey. Agenda Item No. 9. Southlake Seniors - Report on Activities Planned The report was omitted from the meeting. A written report was turned in to Nona Whitehead after the meeting was adjourned. Fran Weiser's written report is attached to these minutes Agenda Item No. 10. Other Items: Dick Johnston noted that Fran Weiser had requested to have Transportation included as a discussion item. Wanda Buschman said that she has used the Grapevine Senior Transportation and explained some of their services. Fran Weiser indicated that she would like the commission to begin to research the transportation services available in surrounding communities. It was decided to place Senior Van on the next agenda as a discussion item. There being no further business, Wanda Buschman moved that the meeting be adjourned at 2:35 p.m. The meeting was adjourned.
