MINUTES
Members Present: Aloha Payne, Dick Johnston, Frances Weiser and Wanda Buschman
Members Absent: John Kelly, Crawford Hall and Jim Goggin
Ex Officio Members Present: Rose Hampton and Virginia Muzyka
City Staff Present: Kim Lenoir, Director of Parks and Recreation
The meeting was called to order at 1:15 p.m. by Chairman Dick Johnston
Agenda Item No. 2. Approval of Minutes for 2/11/97 Meeting
Wanda Buschman clarified her report about assisted care facility visits. Typos were also corrected.
Motion was made to approve the minutes as corrected.

Agenda Item No. 3. Administrative Comments
Kim Lenoir reported that a new Community Services Division was proposed for the City Manager's
Office and that the Community Services Supervisor who is the staff liaison to the Senior Advisory
Commission would move to the City Administrative Offices. Kim Lenoir reviewed the existing city
and board's organizational chart with the Commission members and Metroport Meals on Wheels
employees.
Agenda Item No. 4. Senior Reception - March 16
Fran Weiser reported that we had good publicity in the local newspapers for the upcoming reception.
All the Boards, Commissions, City Council and City department heads have been invited. Rose
Hampshire reviewed the flyer about opportunities and needs for the Seniors. The Board wanted
index cards on the tables for people to write ideas. The program will be from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
with the Mayor welcoming, Rose Hampshire talking about MMOW, Dick Johnston talking about
the Senior Center and Kathy Schaeffer talking about volunteer needs. The set-up will begin at 1:00
p.m. Sunday.
Agenda Item No. 5. Senior Care Facilities
Wanda Buschman reported that Mary Talbot from Cleburne, who is an expert on assisted care
facilities was to talk today to the commission but she is a Silver Hair Legislator and was in Austin
this week. Wanda Buschman will try to get her to come to a future meeting. Dick Johnston wanted
to obtain a directory of the nearby retirement facilities for the Seniors to continue to look at and be

aware of. Many of these facilities have waiting lists for several years so you must plan ahead. Fran
Weiser would like to see some speakers from retirement homes to visit with the commission. Dick
Johnston and Wanda Buschman plan to visit John Kelly's Retirement Home in North Richland Hills
which filled to capacity two months after opening.
The Board discussed how to provide information to the Seniors about long term care insurance. The
Board discussed that they would not distribute the Southlake Seniors mailing list to sales groups.
The Community Center Senior bulletin board could be used for pamphlet information.
Agenda Item No. 6. Discussion: Eubank's House Renovations for Senior Center
Dick Johnston reported that converting the "Eubank's House" to a Senior/Adult Meeting Facility
was on the Southlake Park Development Corporation (SPDC) Meeting for March 17 for
consideration. The Parks and Recreation Board has recommended the Senior Center as a project to
SPDC. If the budget is approved the City will move forward on giving the renter the required 30 day
notice to vacate the property so the committee can begin planning work. Fran Weiser requested that
a kitchen worker be on the planning committee.
Agenda Item No. 7. Report: MMOW - February Statistics
Rose Hampshire distributed the report for February 1997 for Senior Luncheons (attached). Rose
Hampshire explained that attendance was steadily growing. Forty people were present at today's
luncheon. Rose Hampshire sends a personal note to the newcomers with a free meal coupon for their
next visit. The Board thought that was good and helpful in showing that we wanted everyone to get
involved. Currently we have 70 active seniors attending our activities. Fran Weiser read a letter
from Kelly Bradley, Executive Director of MMOW (attached).
Agenda Item No. 8. Report: MMOW - April Activities Planned
Rose Hampshire explained that in April she had a 5th Tuesday to plan something special and she was
contacting some Senior entertainers to perform. The Board also suggested a Silver Hair Legislator
could speak.
Agenda Item No. 9, Report: Parks and Recreation - No report.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 2:39 p.m.

The meeting starts at 1:00 pm and will be held at The Community Center at Bicentennial Park.
Agenda Item No. 3. Administrative Comments - Your packet contains the attendance record. Please
review for accuracy. We hope to wrap-up interviews this week for the Community Services
Supervisor, your staff liaison. Enclosed is a copy of the MMOW agreement with the City and a
current organizational chart. The City Manager is organizing a Community Services Division
within the City Manager's office, beginning in April. Call me if you have any questions or we can
discuss this during this item.
Agenda Item No. 4, Discussion: Senior Reception - Frances Weiser will update us on the progress.
Agenda Item No. 5. Discussion: Senior Care Facilities - A guest speaker is expected to attend with
Wanda Bushman.
Agenda Item No. 6. Discussion: Eubank's House Renovation for Senior Center - Staff will report
the status.
Agenda Item No. 7, Reports: MMOW - February Statistics - Rose Hampshire will have the report
Tuesday.
Agenda Item No. 8 Reports: MMOW - April Activities Planned - This is the opportunity for you
to give Rose Hampshire feedback and ideas for April programs planned.

staff feedback and ideas for programs planned.
