A enda Item No. 3 Administrative Comments.
None.
A enda Item No. 4 Discussion: Role of Commission Members.
Chairman Dick Johnston expressed his view that members should take on active roles in the
Commission, so as to better advise the City Council. The Commission decided to start two
committees, an Assisted Care Facility Committee and a Senior Center Committee. The Assisted
Care Facility Committee will be chaired by Wanda Buschman and will research area facilities and
look into different types of assisted care. The Senior Center Committee will be chaired by Dick
Johnston and will assist City staff with the house purchased from Timarron on 307 East Southlake
Boulevard as a possible senior center.
t
Agenda Item No. 5. Discussion: Assisted Care Facilities
The Commission stated that the community accepts the concept of assisted care, but does not accept
the facility needed for assisted care, because the citizens fear if the assisted care fails then the facility
would become apartments and no one wants apartments in Southlake. Jim Goggin pointed out that
he recently toured an assisted care facility in Flower Mound and the issues Southlake citizens are
worried about haven't materialized. Property values haven't changed and there are no safety
problems. Wanda Buschman stated that the developers should use the terminology of retirement
instead of assisted care.
Agenda Item No. 6. Discussion: Other Items
The Commission discussed having a reception for Southlake seniors, in order to promote the
Southlake Senior Organization and try to get more involvement from seniors. A reception
committee will be chaired by Fran Weiser. The reception is tentatively set for February.
Dick Johnston requested that MMOW post the luncheon menus and give a report on, how many
Southlake residents attend each luncheon.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 3:44 p.m.
