2007-10-09 OFFICIAL MINUTES Approved by the Senior Advisory Commission 11/13/07 CITY OF SOUTHLAKE SENIOR ADVISORY COMMISSION October 9, 2007 Senior Activity Center MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES PRESENT: Jeane Alexander, Chair; David Baltimore, Vice Chair; Jean Boland, (Alternant 2), Dorothy Cosgrove, Charles Boyd, Nancy Sporn and Cleta Pierce, (Alternate 1) MEMBERS AND ALTERNATES ABSENT: Bill Kyle, Marge Kyle EX OFFICIO MEMBERS AND GUESTS PRESENT: Darla Fowler, MMOW Coordinator STAFF PRESENT: Steve Polasek, Director of Community Services, and Amanda Troum, Senior Services Coordinator Agenda Item No. 1. Call to Order Chairman Alexander called the meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. Agenda Item No. 2. Administrative Comments Steve Polasek, Director of Community Services, invited board members and their families to attend the grand opening of Central Park, located across from Central Market grocery store, on Saturday, October 20th beginning at 10:00am. Agenda Item No. 3. Approval of the September 11, 2007, Senior Advisory Commission meeting minutes A motion was made to approve the minutes as presented. Motion: Nancy Sporn Second: Dorothy Cosgrove Ayes: Alexander, Baltimore, Boland, Boyd, Cosgrove, Sporn and Pierce Nays: None Abstention: None Vote: 7-0 Motion carried. Agenda Item No. 4. Public Forum Chairman Alexander opened Public Forum. No report was given at this time. Minutes of the October 9, 2007 Senior Advisory Commission Pagel of 3 OFFICIAL MINUTES Approved by the Senior Advisory Commission 11/13/07 Agenda Item No. 5. Report: CARS (Cleta Pierce) Cleta Pierce, CARS Vice Chairman, presented the CARS report for September 2007. Ms. Pierce reported that at the next CARS board meeting that the category titled "Driver failed to make pickup" will be changed. Ms. Pierce also reported that the number of trips to the Southlake Senior Center for the month of September was 42 with medical/dental being second and personal needs third. Steve Polasek, Director of Community Services, mentioned the willingness of the City to meet with CARS in order to help with the promotion of volunteerism for CARS. Agenda Item No 6 Report: Southlake Senior Activities (Dorothy Cosgrove) Ms. Cosgrove reported that the 2007/2008 Senior Center roster was 99 % correct and that a thank you card had been sent to Public Works for a job well done on the entrance to the Senior Center. She reported that although the temperature for the Texas State Fair Trip was unseasonably hot, all 22 participants had a great time. Ms. Cosgrove mentioned future projects for the Senior Center to include: The formation of the Goodwill Ambassador Isolation Task Force, the 2008 Heritage of America trip presentation, the Tyler Rose Festival Trip, and the need to RSVP for the Friday Night Fun Night. Agenda Item No 7 Report: Metroport Meals on Wheels (Darla Fowler) Darla Fowler, Metroport Meals on Wheels Coordinator, reported that there was an increase in the number of participants in September. She also reported that Sadie's will hold bud vases and give them to the Southlake Senior Center. Ms. Fowler also reported that Tom Thumb would supply the Thanksgiving meal and proposed that a thank you card for the Tom Thumb volunteers be circulated. Proposal to Amend Agenda David Baltimore proposed that the following items be added to the October agenda: Standing item: a report on the status of the new Senior Center facility. Proposed an earlier start time of 1:00 p.m. for the Senior Advisory Commission meetings. Proposed the formation of a planning committee for the May 2008, 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Southlake Senior Center. Agenda Item No. 9.
