Agenda Item No. 1, Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 1:22 PM by David Baltimore, in the absence of Jeane Alexander.
Agenda Item No. 2, Approval of the 4-13-04 Minutes
Bill Kyle moved and Jerry Montague seconded the motion. They were approved unanimously.
Agenda Item No. 3, Report: CARS
Josh reported on the statistics for CARS. The TXDot transportation system was discussed briefly. It
was decided that they also should be required to submit information and user statistics so that the
service can properly be evaluated since the City is paying for this service. Steve Moore will check
into that issue and report at the next Commission meeting. Josh talked about the CARS luncheon for
pastors from the churches in Southlake. He reported that no pastors had responded and therefore the
luncheon would be canceled at this time. CARS is thinking of selling Coke at the Stars and Stripes
Celebration as a means of making extra money.
Agenda Item No. 4. Report: Southlake Seniors Activities
Josh reported that he and Joanne are working on reconciling the participant list so that a new roster
can be distributed soon. Hopefully within the next few weeks the directory will be available.
Dorothy reported that we will soon run out of tables for bridge. This week we have 11 tables total.
Agenda Item No. 5. Report: Metroport Meals on Wheels
Mary introduced Lynn Reed, who will be our new Tuesday MMOW Coordinator at the Center.
Lynn lives in Southlake with her husband and two children. She is anxious to work with the seniors
and get to know them.. Mary also mentioned that the new Program Coordinator is Amy Smith,
replacing Dala. That position has changed slightly in that this position will bridge the gap between
Senior Center services and homebound meal services. This person will also identify needs and be
able to offer resources to seniors who are in need.
Agenda 1 cm DW. 6: Administrative Comments
Joanne reported on the upcoming celebration - "Pop goes the Senior Center" and invited everyone to
attend on June 2e, 11:30 There will be an old fashioned picnic complete with watermelon and
homemade ice cream, plus games, door prizes, entertainment, music, and BINGO. She also
mentioned the upcoming trips with the travel group from Dallas. On July e - LJ Smith from
Medicare will be at the center to present a workshop on the Medicare Prescription Drugs cards and
other Medicare information. Joanne mentioned that the partnership with CARS regarding the van
has been working great.
Agenda Item No. 7: Open Forum
A discussion was opened regarding the "care and feeding" of the senior center. Bill Kyle asked that
several items be included on the agenda for next month including: repairs, replacement of toilet roll
holders, trash situation, lawn and flower beds and drainage. Steve Moore mentioned that the upkeep
of the senior center is really dependent upon staffing. The department does not have adequate staff
to maintain all of the parks and the senior center grounds so mowing the lawn has fallen on the
available recreation staff whenever they have time. Steve also mentioned that Mike Reasoner's
group would be hydro-mulching the area under the big tree soon. Hopefully this will keep the dirt
from sliding into the parking lot and making things very slippery. However, Joanne mention that we
need to have a barrier placed there to keep people from driving over that area and parking under the
tree.
It was mentioned that the members of the Commission would like to see the operations budget for
the senior center. Steve Moore said he would check with Malcolm to see if that was possible.
Josh mentioned that Scott O'Donnell will be coming to discuss the flower bed. He has donated $500
worth of goods and services to the senior center.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:54 PM.
