Item 4U - MemoCITY OF
SOUTH LAKE
MEMORANDUM
October 19, 2021
To: Shana Yelverton, City Manager
From: Ashleigh Casey, Assistant Chief of Police
Item 4U
Subject: Item 4U -Approve a purchase for police department ammunition
in an amount not to exceed $74,000.
Action
Requested: Approve a purchase for police department ammunition in an amount
not to exceed $74,000.
Background
Information: The police department budgets for ammunition in its annual
general fund budget. However, over the past 18 months, the
cost of ammunition has gone up five -fold. This has significantly
impacted the department's ammo budget, and it is affecting law
enforcement agencies across the country. Not only is ammo much
harder to come by in the larger quantities needed for police training,
it is also much more expensive as ammo vendors have opted to sell
at much higher retail rates because demand for ammo is so high.
The requested funds will allow the department to purchase the
necessary annual amount of ammunition without having to decrease
the amount of training that officers need to complete. Because the
department purchases ammunition as it becomes available from
different vendors, I cannot specify a single vendor that will exceed
$50,000 at this point.
Financial
Considerations: Funding for this project was approved in the FY 22 CCPD budget.
The total amount for this expenditure exceeds $50,000, which
necessitates City Council approval.
Strategic Link: C1 - Achieve the highest standards of safety and security.
PDC1 - Reduce crime, the fear of crime, and enhance public safety.
CCPD3 - Achieve the highest standards of safety and security
through modern technology and equipment.
