3. DISCUSSION
A. NEW LIBRARY UPDATE
City Librarian Pfledderer shared with the Board information that was presented to the
City Council. The library opened Sept. 26, 2001. The main library has 10,240 sqft. and
the administrative space on the 2nd floor has 1500 sqft. for staff offices. The library
averages 125,000 visitors a year and the physical collection is around 42,000 items.
Approximately 3,000 of the 150,000 items in cloudLibrary is owned by the Southlake
Library. The 2019 annual circulation was 422,000 items and program attendance was
approximately 36,000. The current library budget is a little over $841 ,000. Site
evaluation in 2016 recommended the library be a standalone facility. Dedicated spaces
for all age groups are a goal. Comfortable lounge seating and study areas are also
popular demands. Business resources, technology training resources, and staff offices
to maximize workflow are also priorities, as well as convenient parking with easy
walkways to accommodate guests. The collection could average approximately 81,000
items. Hidell & Associates is under contract to survey the community and provide
recommendations for the facility and site requirements. Hidell will also provide
construction estimates. Hidell will work to develop rendering to take to the Council. The
goal is to have the facility open in 2025.
B. LIBRARY SURVEY UPDATE
The 2021 Library Survey will run Aug. 9-30 to gather feedback on what the community
wants from Southlake Library to meet their needs. City Librarian Pfledderer asked the
Board for their suggestions and ideas to help promote the survey. Imagine That! Is the
marketing theme.
C. LIBRARY FOUNDATION DISCUSSION
Board Chair Burr led discussion about creating a library foundation for fundraising. A
committee is the first thing that needs to be created. No more than three board members
can be on the committee. Board member Doby is interested, as well as Board members
Bennett and Darr. The library will promote the search for volunteers through the eblast
when the Foundation is ready. The Board talked about library tours for inspiration. A
discussion was held about neighboring communities which have library designs and
attributes that could be used as consideration for Southlake's design.
4. NEW BUSINESS
Chair Burr asked if anyone had any new business. No new business.
