CALL TO ORDER — Chair Lori Burr at 6:35 p.m. 2. CONSENT A. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM THE OCTOBER 28, 2020 SOUTHLAKE LIBRARY BOARD VIRTUAL MEETING 3. REPORTS A. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Cynthia Pfledderer presented circulation statistics: The Library ended the year down 18% for print circulation and October 2020 was 12% below October 2019 stats. Overall, the library saw a 6% increase in circulation for the month because of the increase of digital content. Digital stats: Cloud Library 114% increase, Bookflix 119% increase for the month, Brainfuse saw 379 users for October. Lori Burr asked what grade level uses Brainfuse the most? Tracy Eaton commented that with all the e-blasts schools send out, it would be helpful to target newletters for the grade level that uses it the most. Pfledderer shared that Elementary Reading and Algebra I were the biggest group of users of Brainfuse, followed by 5th grade Math and Algebra II. Tracy Eaton shared she personally is seeing at least 4 e-blasts a week with a lot of information and that targeting specific schools might be best for reaching out with information. Lori Burr concurred with that idea and made suggestion to reach out to principals. Pfledderer will investigate reaching out to schools directly. Computer use and study rooms are down 50-65%. Adult and Youth Programming increased significantly by 1800%. DPSHQ event and take home kits contributed to participation. Lori Burr asked if the Library participated in the parade. Pfledderer responded that the Library did not, but that it was a good idea. Storytime is down. Volunteers increased. Proctored exams and Notary services were down for the month. Shipments of print orders are slowed down because of COVID-19. Purchases were cancelled. More purchases were made through Amazon because they were able to ship in a timelier manner. The Library has reached out to our primary vendor to ensure there would be high priority placed on getting books when they were released. Discussion about possible home delivery for seniors/home bound citizens. Primary concern is offering services that are not staff sustainable after COVID-19 has abated. Discussion about Social Media campaigns: Soup Month, Elf on the Shelf. 4. DISCUSSION A. CHANGES IN PUBLISHING Pfledderer shared a Washington Post article that Penguin/Random House has now purchased Simon & Schuster. The publishing world is now down to 4 main companies. The article described it as "The Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs". With fewer publishing houses, it will be harder for writers to be published. For consumers, we will see narrower options for reading. Big names will most likely be more promoted. Distribution times may also lag, while prices will increase. From a budget standpoint, the Library was issued 30% increase to the materials budget from the City. The Library is seeing 20-30% increase in cost of purchasing materials since the fiscal year started. We may see more creativity sparked from this situation and opportunities may arise: i.e. new publishing houses, self-publishing, direct Amazon sales. Rebecca Petty asked how self- published authors would be found by librarians and Pfledderer responded that it is more difficult as we rely on professional journal reviews. B. SOUTHLAKE CARES Pfledderer shared information about Southlake Cares. The City has special project matrix team and Pfledderer is lead of Southlake Cares Team. Promotions have been on-going to encourage donations to the charities supported by Southlake Cares. Currently, there is a contest to win a $250 gift card by donating to a Southlake Cares charity. December will be the final month for this initiative. This has been a challenging year to get new donors.
