3. REPORT
A. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
Librarian Tucker discussed the Library statistical performance for the month of
December 2019. Print is down -2% for the month of December, but up 3% for the year.
December was a strange month with a very short period between Thanksgiving and

Christmas and we think that impacted circulation as a whole. Brick and mortar stores
saw a -6% decline in sales during the holiday season while online sales increased 17%.
The digital library saw a 14% increase and represents the customer's need for
convenience during peak busy times. Traffic numbers are not accurate because the
security gates were out of working order from September through December 12, 2019.
An estimated traffic count is provided based on historical data. Digital circulation overall
is up 85% and the majority of that can be seen in the Cloud Library and BookFLIX.
Computer use is down for the month and the year but in -Library use of the Wi-Fi and
study space increased. Study and work space overall is a growing demand for the
Library, which is why we are investing more into those lounge and study spaces.
Volunteer hours are down for the quarter but they were up overall for the year in 2019,
so we're watching to see if this is a turn or just a momentary dip. Proctored exams are
becoming less of a demand as universities improve their testing software to track
student activity and reduce the need for proctors. Notary requests are down as well, a
trend we saw last year too. ILL'S are up and we expect them to continue to grow as we
offer this concierge level of service to our customers.
4. DISCUSSION
A. FACILITY & STAFF UPDATE
The Library filled two staff vacancies this month. Eden Caruso will join us a part-time
substitute clerk. She is a student at UNT and has worked at their Library. We have
also hired Amy Pearson as our new Administrative Secretary. She has a background in
small business ownership, teaching, and libraries. The Library installed two new
Selfcheck 500 models with expanded capability to connect to the Cloud Library as well.
These are all -in -one units with a touchscreen and they are in use in the Library now.
We are also working on adding a new Cloud Library module called CloudAssist, that will
allow customers to view both their physical and digital items in their Library account.
We are also using new administrative software for Bibliotheca, IibraryConnect, that will
allow us to view machine status and maintenance as well as run reports for self -checks
and security gates.
B. UPCOMING EVENTS
Southlake Sister Cities and the Library will host a CNY Story Time on January 28th and
follow with the big Lantern Walk event on February 8th. Celebrate the Lunar New Year
with Southlake Sister Cities and the Southlake Library as we light up Town Square with
light and hope for 2020. First, join us from 2-4 PM in Southlake Town Hall for a Lantern
Workshop. You can bring your own supplies to make a custom lantern, or use our
supplies to make a basic lantern. The Lunar New Year Walk through Town Square
begins at 6:30 PM, shortly after sunset. A reception of cake and beverages will be held
on the 3rd floor of Southlake Town Hall following the Lantern Walk. This is a free event.

C. FEBRUARY 2020 MEETING
Since City Librarian Pfledderer will be at the Public Library Association Conference

to change the meet date in February or skip the month and meet again on March 25th.
The Board decided to meet on February 19th.
6. NEW BUSINESS
The Library Board expressed interest in discussing the topic of fundraising for the new
Library. The primary interest was for a one-time fundraising event instead of the on-
going maintenance of a Foundation. There is an interest in possibly working other
organizations or offering a book plate options for books purchased for the collection.
Other options, such as selling bricks were discussed. The Board would like to have
more of a discussion on this topic at a future meeting.
