4. REPORT
4k LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
City Librarian Pfledderer went over the monthly October statistics with the Board.
Library traffic was usually high this year; with a 67% increase. This may have been due
to increased programing and elections.
5. DISCUSSION
5A. COLLECTION CHANGES IN THE LIBRARY
City Librarian Pfledderer explained upcoming collection changes to the Board such as;
Librarian Tucker creating a new cookbook neighborhood and Librarian Cameron
reorganizing the periodical collection by topic instead of alphabetically. Bridge books are
being pulled out and given their own category as transition books for children moving
from Picture Books/Early Reader level to Juvenile levels. A Library Board member
asked why all materials are not grouped by topic instead of by the Dewey Decimal
system; City Librarian Pfledderer explained the positives and negatives of the two
methods. Having a classification system such as Dewey Decimal makes it easier for
patrons to find a specific book, while grouping like books together makes browsing
easier. City Librarian Pfledderer talked about how neighborhoods are a good
compromise to this issue as they allow like books to be grouped by subject while
maintaining a classification scheme within the neighborhood, making it easier to find a
specific book in the topic. The Library hopes to increase the use of neighborhoods in the
future.
5B. LIBRARY COLLECTION USAGE
City Librarian Pfledderer broke down the collection usage statistics. She discussed the
top nonfiction and fiction genres read by adults last year and how the Library staff uses
that information to make collection decisions.

6. CARILLON PARC STEERING COMMITTEE UPDATE
City Librarian Pfledderer opened up the floor for Board Member Burr to discuss the
Carillon Library Project with the other members. There is a standstill with the property
development team. Board Member Green mentioned a likely future economic downturn
and its possible effect on the project.
7. LIBRARY FOUNDATION UPDATE
City Librarian Pfledderer discussed the high volume of patrons waitlisted for programs.
Board Member Green asked how we can serve more of these people. City Librarian
Pfledderer noted the Library's small staff as an issue for providing more of
programming. Board Member Green pointed out that members of the community could
offer their expertise in subjects for specific programming. Librarian Pfledderer explained
that is happening and that a group of community members recently approached the
Library staff about doing a coding workshop and the plans for this program are in the
works now. The Library is open to community member involvement in programming but
there is the added effort of screening content and people by the Library staff.
City Librarian Pfledderer discussed the possibility of the Library connecting with the Arts
Council to create a foundation to support the new Library facility and future programing.
Board Member Green indicated that he plans on making this a priority in the new year.
City Librarian Pfledderer said that Assistant City Manager, Ben Thatcher appreciates
the idea and suggests it is best set up as a cultural foundation, not exclusively a Library
foundation. The Board discussed fundraising ideas and programing ideas such as
national exhibitions. City Librarian Pfledderer discussed the main goal of the Library: to
promote continued success of the community. City Librarian Pfledderer wants to
optimize the new facility to meet this goal by providing more targeted programing and by
offering more community spaces.
8. NEW BUSINESS
Board Member Dhanani proposed the idea of starting multicultural book clubs focusing
on culturally and racially diverse authors meeting around four times a year to start
community wide conversations about race, ethnicity, and inclusion. These meetings
could be led by a librarian. It was said that if some patrons do not want to attend
meetings, the books could also be recommended as a solo read.
9. PUBLIC FORUM
Library Board Chair Carlson opened the public forum at 7:15 p.m. and asked for anyone
wishing to speak to come forward. There being no questions, the public forum was
closed at 7:15 p.m.
