Topic: Proposed Southlake 2025 Vision Statement and Goals and Objectives
Meeting #1— Thursday, October 16, 2003
Southlake Town Hall Third Floor Training Rooms
Summary of Questions and Comments
I wanted to know about the thoughts regarding why does this new housing need to occur to
increase the number of new school children. Are you saying that unless we bring in new
school age children, it is going to ruin our school district? Tell me why?
Does the school district get paid by the state regarding the number of kids enrolled?
The school district was good before we started doing all of this building, so why do we need
to do more of this residential to "maintain" the schools? It will be as good as it has been?
You have to keep turning the population to keep schools at full enrollment as kids grow up
and no longer are in the school district.
Where are you proposing to put this new type of residential housing? Do you have locations
as to where this will be placed? What were the sites that the committee looked at for the
potential to put this new type of housing?
What is the optimum class size that drives the Committee assumption regarding the optimal
school population?
Objective 2.3 an example then, would this be the Villas at Timarron?
Objective 3.4 can you clarify what types of partnerships you are referring to?
Objective 4.2 What is the goal of developing streets with more capacity, what is the general
philosophy, is it bringing more traffic into areas that don't have as much currently, or is it to
route traffic to the major thoroughfares?
You know how much the traffic coming on to S.H. 114 from F.M. 1709 will be?
Which roads are we going to try to improve?
I think we should look at trying to purchase property down by the train tracks so there would
be an opportunity to tie into light rail that would come in the future.
Do you know the projections on when Randol Mill is to be completed?
The only reference to public transportation is along State Highway 26. Is there any potential
for public transportation going from east to west along S.H. 114?
Could you tell me the committee's thoughts on Objective 4.3 and Objective 4.6. Trails
regarding connections to retail and commercial and community areas. In Texas due to the
weather, you don't see a lot of people walking or biking around. What is the thought process
in regards to trails?
On Objective 5.7 open lands, natural land forms, agricultural landscapes, these are wonderful
words but it is not consistent with development. Are you proposing to change the
development regulations in ways that prevent developers from going in and taking out the
exact things that are emphasized in the statement? We need someone to tell us how to
change the rules so that developers cannot take out the natural resources. It would be helpful
to state an understanding that the development community does not emphasize these features.
It would help to have the committee make a statement that encourages the development
community to place emphasis on natural resources.
I want to see a statement that says to the elected officials "be creative, be bold" with problem
properties and not just have a general statement.
It seems as if the vision/goals/objectives only deal with the land and development only. Will
the committee also recommend how should the city be operated? It concerns me that we
have such nice facilities and lack the people to staff them.
On Objective 6.2 regarding the location of the Department of Public Safety substations, is
this in addition to the three identified public safety facilities? If so, what are the locations
that you feel we would need these substations.
What is the status on the property north of State Highway 114?
Does the City of Southlake not have a vision and goals and objectives? Is this document in
conflict with what is currently in place?
1 read the vision statement here, all of the goals and objectives seem to comply to what we
currently have in place. Was it the only purview of the committee to develop ideas regarding
the 20% of what is available? There is nothing here that deals with a recommendation on
how to revise the City's ordinances to deal with the remaining 20% of the undeveloped land?
I commend the committee on all of your efforts. You have done an excellent job coming up
with the vision statement and goals and objectives.
