Southlake Historical Society Accomplishments
September 2002 through January 2004
Reorganized Southlake Historical
Society and conducted business and
planning meetings. (11 meetings held)
Sponsored two programs that
contributed to awareness of Southlake
history: A history of Southlake as seen
through the life of one family, the Shivers,
and A history of police and fire departments
in Southlake. Three programs are in the
works for 2004.
Invited Dave Lieber to the fire/police
program, and he wrote a column about it.
The story of Robert Finn, one of our
speakers, helped bring the community
closer together by creating awareness of
how our past continues into the future.
Initiated an oral history project to
interview people who have lived here a long
time and those who have helped build
Southlake. Audiotapes and/or videotapes
and transcripts of those oral histories will be
placed in the Southlake Public Library so
that anyone in the community can use them
for research or to just get an idea of how life
used to be like.
Trained community members to do
oral histories in a workshop featuring a
Joyce Gibson Roach, a longtime Keller
resident, a newspaper columnist, the editor
of PathFinder magazine and a member of
the Westlake Historical Preservation
Commission.
Assisted the Southlake Police
Department and the Texas DPS in moving
the State Trooper monument back across
Texas 114 to a spot nearer where the
troopers were murdered by Bonnie and
Clyde.
Worked to identify and research
additional historic sites throughout
Southlake in order to apply to the state for
historical markers.
Asked the Southlake Public Library
to establish a local history section, then
worked with the library to create one.
Historical Society members have donated
books about local history, including
"Cemeteries of Northeast Tarrant County"
and "Cast -Iron Forest," about the Cross
Timbers region.
Arranged with the Southlake Journal
and the Southlake Times to publish a twice -
monthly column, History Out Your Window.
Topics have included early settlers, life in
the now-Southlake area in the 1800s and
early 1900s, cemeteries and historical points
of interest.
Began a project to preserve
photographs of Southlake by scanning in
pictures from private collections.
Working with local Eagle Scout
candidate and City to develop Historical
Society website.
Assisted a business that wanted to
display old photographs of Southlake.
Took possession of historical
artifacts being stored by the city.
Displayed historical items such as a
1913 voting list from the Dove community,
personal items of the Graham family and
Southlake Fire Department memorabilia in a
display case at the library.
Developed a flier to tell people
about our organization and how to join.
Raised awareness by attending the
July Fourth celebration and to pass
out fliers and tell people about our group.
Featured in several newspaper
articles, including the Southlake Times
(about our log cabin) and the Star-
Telegram's Up Close section (about our
organization in general).
