Item 4C SYAC 2017-2018 Report2017-2018
SYAC Report
The Southlake Youth Action Commission had 7 members and 4 additional attendees for
the 2017-2018 program. SYAC met monthly from October through May – canceling their
April meeting in favor of attending the May 1 City Council meeting.
This year SYAC students primarily focused on the development of the 2035 Youth
Master Plan, as well as on updating SYAC byla ws.
In addition to these two projects, SYAC members had a welcome talk with the Mayor,
toured town hall, and received an update on Champions Club and on the Citizen Survey
results.
Here’s what SYAC participants had to say about their experience:
“I am so honored to have participated in SYAC for the past two years. I have
learned meeting procedures, leadership skills as well as how to develop my
ideas into a city plan. Thank you!”
“This year, SYAC has given me the opportunity to really feel like I am making a
contribution to my community. Although I have been living in Southlake for the
past 14 years, I've never felt as I got the opportunity to physically contribute to
make a difference in the community. By being in SYAC, I have learned so much
more about the City's workings and organization that I don't think I would've been
able to experience otherwise. I've also gotten the opportunity to interact with
some really intelligent people and the meetings we had has made me feel much
more connected to my peers. It feels great that I am able to contribute to
something that will be utilized for the incoming youth of Southlake and for the
City's upcoming developments.”
“SYAC has allowed me to directly participate and benefit the community I live in. I
have learned to listen to others ideas and generate solutions to present
problems. I have enjoyed sharing my personal views and insight in order to
contribute to the Southlake Youth Master Plan. I believe this is a great forum for
students to become better leaders in their community.”
