Item 4K Resolution No. 17-005, Call a General Election for May 6, 2017 Item 4K Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers, I am presenting Item 4K, Resolution No. 17-005, to call a General Election for May 6, 2017 1 Resolution No. 17-005 Call the May 6, 2017 General Election Municipal Elections are governed by both state law and the City Charter. The Texas Election Code sets out the method for a governing body to call, or “order,” a municipality’s general election. The purpose of this agenda item is to call a General Election to be held on May 6, 2017 for the purposes of electing persons to City Council, Places 1 and 6. These positions are elected for three-year terms and will expire in May of 2020 or until their successors are duly elected and qualified. The filing period for this election began January 18 and will conclude at 5:00 p.m. on February 17. Approval of this resolution also authorizes the Mayor to enter into agreements with Denton County and Tarrant County Elections Administrators to conduct a joint election with other entities (municipalities and school districts) conducting their election on May 6, 2017. Each entity included in the joint election benefits from the Counties providing election services. In addition to reduced costs, Southlake residents have the convenience of going to any early voting location located within their County. 2 Resolution Highlights The highlights of this resolution include: Specifying the candidate filing period for the General Election; Authorizing the Mayor to execute joint election agreements with both Denton County and Tarrant County Elections Administrators to conduct our joint election; Establishing the Early Voting period, to include dates and hours of polling locations; and Establishing the Election Day locations and hours of polling locations. Please note, the early voting and Election Day polling locations for Denton County have not been communicated to us at this time but will be advertised fully once received. 3 Additional Information Each year the City Secretary’s Office budgets monies to conduct the annual municipal elections. As we have done in the past, staff will work closely with CISD to ensure election requirements and needs are addressed. The City’s website pages will be updated as additional information becomes available to the City. 4 Questions: Contact Lori Payne 5 Thank you and please contact Lori Payne if you have any questions on the election.
