Items 4M & 4N
Honorable Mayor and members of the City Council, this audio presentation will cover Items 4M and 4N on your March first agenda.
1
Requested Action
Item 4M – accept certification of the City Secretary
Item 4N – cancel the May 7, 2016 General Election
Items 4M and 4N are related to the May 7, 2016 General Election which was called by City Council on February second.
A municipality may cancel an election if there are unopposed candidates
in the election.
The filing period to have your name placed on the ballot began January 20, 2016 and concluded on February 19, 2016.
The City Council places for election this year
are Places 3, 4 and 5. And the City Secretary received one application for each place and received no declaration of write-in candidacy. And as such, the city has an uncontested election.
The Election Code allows a municipality to cancel their election, upon receipt of the certification from the city secretary.
2
Certification of Unopposed Candidates
The Election Code provides that the authority responsible for having the official ballot prepared shall certify in writing that a candidate is unopposed for election to an office if,
were the election held, only the votes cast for that candidate in the election for that office may be counted.
The certification shall be delivered to the governing body of the political
subdivision as soon as possible after the filing deadline for placement on the ballot and list of write-in candidates.
The filing period concluded on February 19, 2016. And the write-in
deadline was February 23, 2016.
A copy of the certification will be placed on the City’s website
