International Code Council
Established in 1994 as a non-profit organization dedicated to developing a single set of comprehensive and coordinated national model construction codes
I-Codes are now used in all 50
states and Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and military establishments
Used by many foreign countries as well

Code Development
Code changes are submitted to a code committee comprised of code regulators and construction industry representatives
Code development committees and eligible voters determine whether
to ratify, decline, or make their own recommendation
Process is completed every three years
Consensus-based code development process allows for open participation in establishing results

Code Amendments
Regional amendments are promoted through the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG)
NCTCOG promotes the standardization of model construction codes in an effort to simplify
the construction process, advance the safety of building systems, encourage common code interpretation, facilitate the mobility of contractors, and to reduce training and construction
costs

COG Committees
The Regional Codes Coordinating Committee (RCCC) appointed by NCTCOG oversees the code development process for the North Texas region and recommends amendments to the I-Codes for adoption
by municipalities
Five advisory boards review proposed amendments and forward their findings to the RCCC
Review process is spread out over 12-18 months
Municipalities may elect and are
encouraged to include the recommended amendments as part of adopting the new I-Codes

Southlake Code Adoption
The City of Southlake historically adopts the most current I-Codes along with NCTCOG amendment recommendations
The adoption of updated codes demonstrates Southlake’s commitment to implementing
up-to-date standards for construction methods and materials
Adopting the latest I-Codes allows Southlake to maintain a high rating for insurance risk as established by the industry

is well-known throughout the North Texas region as a leader in adopting and implementing construction codes
