Item 4J
Resolution No. 16-005, Call a General Election for May 7, 2016
Item 4J
Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers,
I am presenting Item 4J, Resolution No. 16-005, to call a General Election for May 7, 2016
1
Resolution No. 16-005
Call (order) the May 7, 2016 General Election
Municipal Elections are governed by both state law and the City Charter. The Texas Election Code sets out the method for a governing body to call, or “order,” a municipality’s general
election. The purpose of this agenda item is to call a General Election to be held on May 7, 2016 for the purposes of electing persons to City Council, Places 3, 4 and 5. These positions
are elected for three-year terms and will expire in May of 2019 or until their successors are duly elected and qualified. The filing period for the 2016 General Election began January
20 and will conclude at 5:00 p.m. on February 19.
Approval of this resolution also authorizes the Mayor to enter into agreements with Denton County and Tarrant County Elections Administrators
to conduct a joint election with other entities (municipalities and school districts) conducting their election on May 7, 2016. Each entity included in the joint election benefits from
the Counties providing election services. In addition to reduced costs, Southlake residents have the convenience of going to any early voting location located within their County.

Additional Information
Each year the City Secretary’s Office budgets monies to conduct the annual municipal elections.
As we have done in the past, staff will work closely with CISD to ensure the Election
Day polling location is organized in a manner to manage placement of elections signs.
The City’s website contains information on the upcoming election, which includes but is not limited
to candidate filing information, early voting, sample ballots and polling locations. These pages will be updated as additional information becomes available to the City.
